The first thing I always did after I arrived at the hospital I was working at was to throw on my white coat and hung a stethoscope over my shoulders.
While I walked away from the lockers and started my way to the room of my first patient I pulled my hair in a loose bun which I usually finished right before I entered the room of my patient.
His name was Henry, Henry Williams. An old man who worked his whole lifetime at a farm to be able to feed his wife and who gave everything for her. They didn't have children but they loved each other eternally and his wife never would have left his side if she could have - in good times as in bad - but she was old. He didn't leave her when she drew her last breath and he held her hand to the bitter end.
Now Mr. Williams got sick - he got cancer. I already felt that his time would come soon and I knew this was one of the cases I wouldn't be able to help him. His body wouldn't survive this one fight and he felt it too - he felt he was getting weaker every day.
He told me he was ready to die when I informed him about his disease but he didn't want to die alone. No one ever wanted to die alone - mostly they are more afraid of dying alone than of dying itself and I didn't want him to be afraid. So every day I visited him and talked with him. He told me about his life as a farmer and about his childhood, about his pets and his siblings, but he never talked about his wife until last night. He told me how much he missed her and that he wants to see her again. He was on the verge of crying and he was so quiet but then he closed his eyes and told me about how he met her first, about their first kiss and about their marriage. He told me about all the silly and funny things they did together and for the first time this night he smiled.
This morning I entered his room and looked at him. A blanket was pulled over his head and he was laying silently in his bed and didn't move. A nurse was standing beside his bed and looked pitiful at me. I knew what was going on; I could see it and I could feel it. Mr. Williams passed away a few minutes ago.
I nodded at Jose, the nurse, and walked out of the room and towards the stair case. I knew where I had to go. Their souls had always been waiting for me at the same spot when I was at work.I ran up all the stairs to the roof top and opened the door to step outside. There he was standing. His arms were folded behind his back and he looked at the city.
I walked closer to him "Henry?"
He turned around and looked at me. Then he tilled his head slightly.
"It's time to go." I looked comforting at him and smiled.
"One more minute. Let me enjoy the sunset." he said calm and smiled. Afterwards he turned away from me and looked at the distance again.
He wasn't afraid or sad - the only feeling I felt coming from his soul was joy. He had waited so long to see his wife again but it was always hard to let go.
We stood at the roof top in silence until the sun climbed above the roofs of the other buildings and then he looked at me and nodded "I am ready."I put my hand on his shoulder and teleported both of us to heaven - his personal heaven.
It consisted of a house which was surrounded with nothing but nature. No noises and no sight of any other buildings. The only things you could hear were some birds which were singing and the quiet creaking of a swing chair on the terrace of the house and on the chair there was his wife. When she saw him she covered her mouth and got up from her chair. Henry walked towards the house and his wife was watching every move he made. When they were standing right in front of each other they remained silent for a while until she pulled her husband in a firm hug. They were gripping so tightly to each other as if they never would want to let go - and now they wouldn't have to.
Even though I could have watched them forever I needed to return to earth. I got back on the roof and at the moment I arrived I heard my pager go off.
After I had a quick look at it I ran downstairs and saw some nurses and doctors rush by as I arrived. They were bringing a patient to the emergency operating room who had a car accident and there was a second patient who tried to commit suicide. The second patient was already safe but I had to look after her since I wasn't trained for any operations.
I walked in her room and looked at her records while she was unconscious. She was only 17 years old and a pretty girl. Nothing in her files seemed to give away any clue on why she wanted to end her life. I hung the files back to the end of the bed when she woke up."w-Where am I?" she stuttered and her glance moved around the room.
"You are at the St. Joseph's Hospital, Madison." I explained and then I asked with a soft voice "Do you want to tell me why you did that?"
She shook her head lightly and whispered with fear in her voice "I don't even know what happened."
