Thirty Two

Miss Conner's Pov

A searing, burning pain in my lower abdomen woke me. My forehead wrinkled as a groan tumbled out of my mouth. I twisted on the soft surface that I presumed was a bed, trying to relieve the discomfort. It did nothing except make it worse, so I reluctantly decided to just concentrate on breathing through it. Unfamiliar walls and appliances greeted me, along with the dull, rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor.

For a moment I was confused as I gazed around the white room, not remembering where I was or why I was there. But then the damn that was blocking my memory in my mind broke and all my memories flooded back in.

Caleb, holding a knife to Shay's throat. Caleb....confessing his "love" for me. Me "confessing" my love for him.

A searing white-hot agony exploding from my stomach, the amber eyes I loved so much flooding with tears.

The soft, safe, warm feeling of her lips pressed against mine even as the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth. The acknowledgement of death.

The whispered "I love you" before everything went black.

I choked on a sob and buried my face into the pillow, moaning when my stomach gave another angry flare of pain.

"She's awake!" I heard someone yell and a moment latter the pattering of feet made itself known.

"Ms. Conner? My name is Charlotte Danvers. I'm the general surgeon here, and the one that operated on you."

I sluggishly raised my head, my gaze clashing with the grey ones of a frail auburn-haired doctor that looked to be in her late 40's. She hesitated when I met her eyes and refused to say anything, but powered on anyways. "Your wound was extremely severe, there was extensive tearing to a few organs in your lower abdomen, but surgery went very well. I have been in and out to check your wound for the past couple days."

She hesitated again, and I wanted to roll my eyes at her flighty exterior. Seriously, what was I going to do from this bed? Stab her with a scalpel? Not likely.

"Has anyone been in to see me?" My voice was hoarse with disuse and I had to cough a couple times to get the full message out, but I managed.

The woman's brows lifted and her eyes crinkled, further expanding her collection of wrinkles, as she smiled. "Yes, Doctor Daniels and her daughter have been here everyday."

All the breath whooshed out of my lungs and my head fell back onto the pillow as I sighed in relief. I was worried that Shay would be mad and even refuse to see me, considering I very well put my life on the line to save hers. I was so so so relieved to know she was safe. I would do it a thousand times over if it meant she'd get to live, and I suppose that should scare me, or worry me, but it didn't.

"I'll have a nurse fill you up on something for the pain, and I'll be back in a little while to check your incision."

She made to leave but paused just inside the doorway. "You should also know that the person who put you here has been caught and is in custody. But the police have placed a "guard" outside your door just for safety measures. You're safe here, Miss Conner."

I smiled at her and whispered out a "Thank you" but she didn't hear it and left. It didn't really mean much to me what she'd said, I knew that Caleb was from a wealthy family. They'd have him out in no time, but it brought me a small amount of comfort to know I was safe for at least a little bit.
