Chapter 10

(2 days later)

Jessica's POV

It's been 2 days since Cato and the others arrived there has been at least 3 or maybe 2 deaths since I don't really pay attention. My mind was on high alert because there might be a few tributes who might take the careers' injurees to an advantage and attack. They might wake up in a few hours since Marvel started to move his hand a few minutes ago.

"Oak, watch 'em. I'm just gonna see if there might be tributes spying around" I said as I stood up and grabbed my knife.

"Stay safe?" He asked me worried while he was sitting on a log

"I always am,Oak. How about you promise me you'll still be here when I come back?" I asked

"Course" He answered in a small uncertain voice

"Hey you'll be fine" I said and kneeled down to his level and kissed his forehead

I've been walking around for quite a while and didn't see any tributes from high up or down below so I decided to come back to camp. Once I was there, I saw Oak in a circle with everyone including Clove, Marvel, Cato and a guy from... I think he's from 3.

"Jess, so glad for you to show up I thought you ditched us" Marvel shouted

"No way am I leaving you guys and whose the guy?" I asked

"He's from 3. we didn't kill him since he said he could make the bombs active again and blow anyone who tries to steal our supplies." Clove answered me while I sat down next to her

"Looks like your still the same old Clove" I said

"So tell us what happened while we were out?" Cato asked me

"Man, almost no kills" Marvel said after I told them a boring Hunger Games story

"Like everyone says the careers always make the games exciting" Clove said

"Come on guys, rest up a bit you just woke up" Oak said

"Aw, Clove he's worried about you" I said then we all laughed well aside from Oak and Clove who blushed a bit and the guy from 3 kept quiet.

"Hey guys look there's smoke over there" Marvel pointed up the sky

"Well isn't this year's tributes easy to hunt" Clove said in a joking manner

"Alright then, let's go careers" Cato said "You 3 stay here and watch the supplies"

We started to sprint towards the smoke and once we were close we came to a halt

"Okay, Marvel, Jess and Oak  take the south part and me and Clove will take the front" Cato instructed us and we all nodded.

Marvel was up front and me and Oak quietly followed him when suddenly Marvel just grabbed his spear and was about to throw it to someone and when I whipped my head I saw Katniss and Rue. I was about to tackle Marvel down but Oak beat me to it. Everything happened so fast, Marvel and Oak was fighting and then he stabbed Oak through the heart then aimed his spear for Rue. I was frozen in place but when I saw Oak bleeding all I saw was red then I grabbed my knif and through it at Marvel. 

When everything was done I had to evaluate everything that happened to make sure what I saw was real. Then it hit me, that Oak was dead.

"Oak" I cried desperately I ran towards him not caring about Marvel's body. I mean Marvel was my friend but how could he kill him,Oak, such a young child who still could've achieved so many things

"Jessica, I'm fine. I could finally see my sister" He said

"Your sister?" I asked. He never did talk about his family relatives and me being such a selfish person only thought about myself.

"Yeah, she was a lot like you strong-spirited and always caring. The best sister like you" He said

"I'm not the best sister" I said crying

"Yes, you are. You took care of me and made sure that the careers wouldn't be out to get me, even though we weren't even friends before. Promise me something?" He aske me

"Anything" I said

"Tell Clove I love her even though it was such a short time and give her this" He handed me, what I assumed was his token. It was the same pin he wore when it was the interview

"My parents gave me that and they made another one for my sister" He said

"I'll make sure, Clove gets it" I said while my eyes were filled with tears

"Jess, I'm afraid of dying. Please tell me how you would imagine it would be so I wouldn't be scared" He practically begged me

"I imagine being in a forest like this" I started trying to surpress my sniffs "there would be a lot of flowers and blooming trees and it would smell like pine trees back at District 7. My family would be there welcoming me with open arms and if I leave anyone behind I would watch them from up there" I said and realized Oak finally closed his eyes that's when I lost it and just screamed.

I finally looked up ad saw Katniss crying too from Rue's death. We both looked at each other in the eye and realised the same thing we can't just leave them on their death beds like this. We started to put their bodies near each other and decorated them with flowers, we both stayed silent and didn't say a word. When we finished we went our separate ways and I gave the sign to Oak I put my index and middle finger on my lips and then on Oak's heart. Then I stood up and did the sign again.

Once I was a few meters away I heard Clove and Cato scream my name bahind me

"Jess you're alright" Cato said

"Where's Oak" Clove asked

"He wanted you to have this" I said and gave his token to Clove "He loves you, did you know that?"

I satrted to walk again and only Cato was following me now

"Jess are you alright?" Cato asked

"I'm done Cato"
