So where is she?" He walked to a tree and snatched up her sketchbook.
"Hey." The rest of them walked over.
"I always know where she is." She stood up and took her sketchbook back.
"Sorry. I left early this morning."
"And went out without me." Said Alex, jokingly, because her hair was soaked.
"Did Michael help you get ready for bed?" He asked.
"I don't see why you would need to know anything like that?"
"It's a yes or no question." Said Lucas.
"Either way, that doesn't matter to you."
"You right." Said Alex, hopelessly.
"So, what do you guys like to do for fun?" Asked Riley.
"Bike somewhere. Anywhere." Said Maya.
"Or surf." Added Alex.
"I can't surf."
"I took a few lessons on vacation." Said Lucas.
"Wanna join us in the afternoon?" He asked.
"Sure."
"Got any places to rent bikes?" Asked Riley.
"Right down the street." Lucas, Riley, Farkle, Alex, and Maya all went to a busier part of where they lived with more people and buildings.
"You know that we live in a city, right?" Asked Riley.
"Far different view." Maya pulled down a ladder on a fire escape and began to climb up it, followed by the rest of her friends, until they were on the roof.
"It is different." Said Lucas. Maya sat down against the wall.
"Ya." He sat down next to her.
"You miss New York?"
"I miss you guys." She said, putting her head on his shoulder.
"We missed you too, water bug."
"Did Alex tell you that nickname?"
"Yep." He said. She rolled her eyes.
"How's your love life?" He asked.
"Dead."
"What about that pregnancy test?"
"That had nothing to do with love."
"I see. I miss being in seventh grade and having no real feelings."
"Matthews just had to give us them." She laughed. "He still teaching about your lives?"
"He still speaks about yours in a way."
"What?"
"He relates the separation with history."
"Course he does."
"And about keeping secrets."
"I'm not." After talking for a little while, the conversation involved everyone and Lucas watched the way that her and Alex acting around each other. So comfortable. He almost envied it, though he knew it was friendship, yet worried it was more. Maya occasionally looked over at Lucas, making sure he didn't notice.
