her seat was empty.

i heard she was in school today because she was registered.

i paused and turned to the class.

it was bad enough that mr. franco forced me to come into work today.

i guess this what i wanted right?

to avoid her well being for a bit.

"page eleven, source five. you have a test next week."

the groans from the students washed over the classroom.

i managed to somewhat brush it off.

"he's meant to be the cool teacher." i heard a voice mutter to a friend.

i resisted the urge to roll my eyes and simply got back to work.

the classroom door opened, causing everyone to draw their attention to the threshold of it.

in stumbled savannah marie.

she walked in without uttering a word and silently sat in her seat.

the students eyed me, waiting for my reaction to which, i then acted upon.

"can i have your late pass miss marie?"

the classroom fell silent, waiting for savannah's response.

she looked up at me.

that's when our eyes locked, those brown orbs of hers narrowed.

i hoped for the worst, because that's what was coming my way.

she shrugged her shoulders and picked up her pencil, tapping it harshly on the desk.

she placed her palm underneath her chin for support.

"do you have one?" i asked, stopping my actions as so did the class.

the eerie silence would make you think you were deaf.

i watched her movements, stiffening in my seat.

"i don't." she said with a look, avoiding my gaze.

i hummed.

okay.

"so you have a reason why you are-" i paused to roughly calculate the time that had been into the lesson before she arrived.

"twenty minutes late, because for a senior that's unthinkable. especially if you are hoping to graduate."

"i'm here now, what's the big deal?"

"i have to say miss marie; your behavior this term has been monitored carefully. it seems as if i give you so many detentions, yet you still don't get the message."

she had her head lowered, making it look like as if she wasn't listening.

"see me after class."

i dismissed the conversation and turned to the other students.

"all eyes on your books."
