"Morning, Jessie." I sighed, stepping into her home which she shared with her awful husband and seemingly innocent two boys. "Damn, you look exhausted, another sleepless night?" As she said this, I sensed a hint of worry. Since Jack died I have been getting less and less sleep, most nights only getting an hour if I'm lucky. These past five months, give or take, have been literal hell for me and Jess knows it. "I can't tell if I've been getting better or worse, it's all become a blur. Don't worry too much about it, I'm going to be fine. You know I can handle myself. I'll try harder to sleep more, okay?" I sigh and give her a side hug, grabbing an apple and taking a small bite. "Thankfully, I'm getting my appetite back.. Slowly but surely." "(y/n), you'll have to let him go eventually. I know it's a pain in the ass, but... But it'll get better soon. I promise." She says with a faint smile playing across her lips. "You should take your own advice.." I murmur as Pete, her pig of a husband, walks inside. I give him a sharp glare and exit the room, "I'm at the doors today. If you need something, come get me." I let myself out of her home and head towards our front gates.
A few days ago, our recruiter, Aaron, and a few others went out in search of some new members. I've grown concerned as it's never taken Aaron this long. Maybe he found multiple groups? Maybe the car got stolen or ran out of gas? The infinite list of "what ifs" and "maybes" grows ever second they're gone.
As the day passed, I couldn't help but grow bored- and sleepy. I was fighting consciousness and thanking god that Spencer came along for his shift, meaning mine was up. I smiled and gave him a high five before walking off to the small wood gazebo by a few trees. This was one of my favorite places, more often than not it was left alone- my secret paradise really. I sighed and laid down on the bench, staring off at the small group of trees Deanna and Reg had been growing. Before I knew it, I was asleep in the very position.
I awoke to a creaking and the sound of engines. In this world, almost everyone was a light sleeper. I stumbled to my feet and groaned as my back let out a loud crack, word of advice- don't sleep on benches. Quickly, I ran to the source of the noise. It was the gate, thankfully it wasn't anything abnormal. Just someone coming in or leaving, but that didn't explain the engine. I didn't see any cars... I pursed my lips and walked to the opening of a gate. A large group along with Aaron stepped inside our community, a car behind them that must have stopped moments ago. I was one of the select few, really the only one, who was allowed a weapon while inside. I was the main source of protection really. Most of these people couldn't tell a walker from an old tree. I hesitantly placed my hand on my gun that rested in its holster on my hip. "Calm down, (y/n). They're friends." Aaron smirked and ruffled my hair as he passed. "Shut the hell up, I didn't know this. They could've been holding you hostage. I don't trust the pirate." I sneered back at him while motioning to the main with an oddly large and bushy beard. Aaron was like family really, we tease each other like siblings so I can't be too pissed at him. Slowly I stepped in front of the group, speaking in a low, but harsh tone.
"Welcome to Alexandria."
