Chapter Fourteen

"Magnus Bane, where on Earth did you find four kittens?" Adrian called, carefully closing the door behind him as he was swarmed by four overly excited tiny fluffballs.

One of the kittens ran circles around him weaving its way between his feet. A second kitten pawed at his leg trying to climb up. The third kitten kept running towards him before pausing and skittering back slightly as if it was nervous. The fourth stood to the side watching him carefully.

"Ah Adrian." Magnus spoke in greeting as he walked around the corner. Upon spotting him the first three kittens ran over to him whilst the fourth slowly padded up to Adrian sitting itself on his foot. Adrian couldn't help but smile at the fourth kitten. "I see you've met the kittens."

"Attacked by them would probably be more accurate." He muttered picking up the kitten on his foot and cradling it to his chest. The kitten looked up at him with a slightly annoyed expression before curling up into his arms. "Why do you have four kittens?"

"I'm not planning on keeping all of them." The high warlock of Brooklyn spoke in his own defence. "I was coming home from a club and I found them abandoned in an alleyway. I couldn't exactly leave the poor things there. What kind of a heartless monster do you think I am? Besides only three of them are going to stay until I can find them another home which at this rate could be months."

"You're sure they don't belong to anyone?"

Adrian gently stroked the kitten in his arms. It stretched itself out slightly before curling back up again it's breathing slow and sleepy.

"As far as I'm aware four similar kittens don't just all wander into a cardboard box by accident." Magnus shrugged. The warlock then reached down picking up one of the kittens and holding it out. Adrian couldn't help but think that the scene resembled Simba being held out in The Lion King. "This is Chairman Meow. He's staying. He's a little shy but you'll probably get along."

"Chairman Meow?"

Magnus shrugged. "I liked it."

"I hate to admit it but it kind of suits him."

"Of course it does. I gave it to him." The warlock shrugged letting the kitten down. "So, what brings you back here? From what I heard you were at the Institute running around with Maryse and Robert Lightwoods children." Magnus spoke Maryse's name with distaste. Adrian knew that the two of them didn't particularly get along. Maryse wasn't the biggest fan of downworlders or those who commonly associated themselves with them. Like Adrian.

"It's a long story but basically Clary currently hates my guts. She found out that Valentine is our father and I accidentally implied that I already knew. Being Clary she picked up on it and convinced herself that I'm keeping all sorts of secrets from her."

Magnus raised an eyebrow.

"She brought up Sam so I left before I ended  up saying something I'd regret." Adrian spoke trying to sound as nonchalant as before but his voice sounded a lot smaller. "I know it's not her fault and I know that she doesn't know what happened but I don't trust the things that I say to be rational. There's too much going on."

Adrian avoided looking at Magnus Bane instead he focused on storking the kitten in his arms. He was half convinced that it had fallen asleep. He had to admit that it was pretty cute. If his families house hadn't been destroyed he probably would have taken it home with him. His mom probably wouldn't have minded too much.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Magnus asked hesitantly

"Do you want to talk about it?" Magnus asked hesitantly. Adrian shook his head in reply. "That's good. There's a party in a few hours and I need to get ready."

Adrian laughed then paused and frowned.

"I thought you were supposed to be in hiding from Valentine."

"It's one of the biggest parties of the year. I'm not going to miss it because some maniac shadowhunter decided to start targeting warlocks. Besides I have a personal reason for attending."

"Don't get drunk." Adrian told the warlock not bothering to try and stop him. He knew from past experiences that it wouldn't work. Besides Magnus was powerful. So long as his mind wasn't clouded from alcohol he would probably be ok.

"I won't. I'm going to get changed. Feel free to stay to stay as long as you want, you know where everything is." The warlock spoke as he retreated in the direction of his bedroom. "Oh, and keep an eye on the kittens. I don't want them destroying my curtains."

Adrian gently placed down the kitten in his arms. It was immediately swarmed by it's siblings. Turning around the kitten cast Adrian a dirty look as if to say 'look at what I have to deal with now'.

He wandered over to the couch, grabbing the TV remote as he sat down. The litter of kittens followed after him climbing up onto the couch where he sat. He turned on the TV but didn't really pay attention to it. Part of his mind was focused on the kittens play fighting; the other part was wondering how everyone at the Institute was. Was everything ok there? Had anything bad happened? What were they all planning on going now that they had got Simon back from the vampires?

His thoughts circled around and around until Magnus stepped out of his room holding two jackets.

"Which one?" The warlock asked. Adrian studied them for a second mentally envisioning them against what Magnus was already wearing.

"The one on your right." He told the warlock gesturing to it.

Magnus held the two out so that he could see them and then nodded. He then disappeared back into his room, probably to apply more glitter. The immortal had a glitter addiction. Adrian didn't really understand it.

"I'll probably be back in a few hours." Magnus spoke as he walked over to say goodbye to Chairman Meow.

"Have fun. Don't die."
