Ali sat by the window with a cup of coffee in her hands. Beverly was already in the kitchen, taking out the necessary things for tonight’s dinner. Sarah was also awake. She had been the one to make Ali a hot cup of coffee. It would be the last time she did that for a year.

It was freezing outside, making Ali grateful for the steaming liquid in her hands. She ran hotter than normal humans but nothing compared to shifters. This kind of weather still required the grey sweatshirt she was wearing; along with boots, thick jeans, and black gloves.

“You nervous?” asked Sarah, taking a seat next to her.

Ali shrugged, continuing to stare out the window. “The trip doesn’t worry me. I can handle anything after being shipped off to the military. What worries me is you guys.”

“Ali,” said Sarah, tugging on her sleeve until she turned to face her, “I act childish and young because it’s easier to be happy then to let the hurt consume my thoughts. That doesn’t mean I’m not responsible. Zach and I will be fine, so will the gym. Give me a chance to prove myself. You sacrificed so much and I want to return the favor.”

“Thanks Sarah,” Ali managed to choke out. She fought back the tears, giving her sister a tight hug. Both girls sat there in each other’s arms until a voice from behind had them jumping back.

“You almost made me spill my coffee Zach!” snapped Sarah.

“It’s bad for you anyway. How are you Ali?” he asked, taking a seat on her other side.

“Fine, just worried about you guys.”

“Well don’t be,” he said giving her a bright smile. “One year is a pretty good sacrifice for the rest of our lives. Plus, Beverly is an awesome cook. She also likes to do my laundry.”

“Zach,” warned Ali, narrowing her eyes, “Don’t make her do all the work. She is old.”

“I am not,” shouted a shrill voice from the kitchen.

“Sorry Beverly,” said all three of them. Sarah had no idea what she was apologizing for but it felt right.

Ali wanted to say more but a pair of car lights shone brightly in the morning fog. The black truck pulled up to her house and out stepped Eric. He waved bye to everyone, quickly making his way to the door.

“Hi Eric, thank you for doing this,” said Ali, smiling a bit when she saw the frightened look on his face. She had opened the door before he even got there, successfully scaring him.

“It’s no big deal,” he said, clearing his throat and waving a dismissive hand through the air. “I hate traveling so much anyway. It’ll be nice to take a break.”
