Haley's POV
The screaming stopped and once I had regained enough energy I stood back up, I brushed myself off and looked up to see Matthew's worried eyes on me.
"Are you okay?" he asked me still standing in place,
"Yeah, I'm fine," I replied as I looked down at my feet instead of him.
He didn't reply but I heard him head out of the building and I followed after him slowly. Once we were out of the dungeons, we headed back towards where Josh and Leo were. Within a couple of feet from them, you could feel the tension in the air. I saw Matthew step closer to me as we emerged from the woods and saw the banshees.
Leo's head spun in my direction and he smiled. I smiled back at him, glad he was okay. Our moment ended quickly when the banshee shrieked again saying, "Who is it going to be?"
"What's going on?" Matthew asked as we stepped closer towards Josh and Leo.
After Josh explained to us what was happening my heart sank.
'Do it,' my wolf said to me.
'Do what?' I asked her,
'You know what,' she said,
I felt fear begin to creep up on me as I realized what my wolf was talking about. I now knew what she wanted me to do, but it scared me. I looked at the people around me. I looked at Leo's light blue eyes looking cluelessly around the forest, Josh's hard eyes on Leo, making sure he was safe, then my eyes fell to Matthew. When I looked at him, he was already looking at me, so I gave him a smile. He didn't return it, but I could tell he knew something wasn't quite right. Without thinking I walked up to him and gave him one last kiss. At first he didn't do anything but then he responded and deepened the kiss. I withdrew, looked up at him, and said, "I love you."
I turned around and started to walk towards the banshee when I felt someone grab my arm. I turned around and saw Matthew's desperate eyes staring at me.
"I'm making my wrongs right," I said as I let go of his hand and walked up to the banshee.
"I'll do it," I said.
I heard gasps around me, while the banshee just smiled at me. She extended her hand and I took it slowly. She smiled at me and then started to lead me to where the moon light was shining, directly in the middle of the forest.
"Sisters, take your spots," the banshee said as she walked backwards in front of me.
All the other banshees started to form a circle around me and I felt the fear grow inside of me.
'We're doing the right thing,' my wolf said.
'I know we are, but I'm still scared,' I replied as the last banshee took her place.
Even though you couldn't see it you could feel that the circle had been completed. I looked behind me at my friends one last time as the banshees began chanting. Tears fell from my eyes as I saw them all looking at me with broken hearts. Matthew was crying while Melissa was trying to comfort him. Leo was crying into Josh's chest and even Blake looked like he wanted to cry. I could still hear the banshee's chanting around me, so I looked up at the moon, and just closed my eyes, waiting for whatever would happen next.
Josh's POV
Leo was crying into my chest as we watched Haley sacrifice herself to restore the Balance. The banshees were chanting something in a foreign language and I could feel the power radiating from them. I saw Haley look over at us one last time, then she looked up at the moon and closed her eyes. What happened next, I wish I could forget. A ray of moonlight shot down from the sky and picked Haley up. Haley screamed out in pain as the banshees chanting grew louder.
I felt Leo suck in a breath and then look up. I felt the fear whip through his body and I tightened my grip around his waist. He whined at that, so I loosened my grip on him. I could tell he was still crying and it just got worse as Haley screamed in pain. The banshee's were chanting one word over and over again as they grew louder and louder. Then, faster than I could comprehend, Leo flew out of my arms, shifted and jumped into the circle.
I felt the pain flow through him as he jumped in front of Haley. It shot through me like electricity and I fell to the ground screaming out Leo's name. After all the screaming, the banshees broke the circle making Leo and Haley fall in the process.
"Leo!" I heard Haley shriek as she moved closer to his body.
I felt something twist inside my gut as I rose to my feet. Please don't be dead. Please, don't be dead. Once on my feet I quickened my pace and fell down beside Leo's body.
"Leo," I said, my voice barely a whisper.
No answer, Leo just lay there, motionless, but he wasn't dead because I could see his chest rising and falling. I felt someone walk up to me. I broke my eye contact with Leo long enough to look at the person standing in front of me. The banshee stood there staring down, wide eyed at Leo.
"What happened?" I growled out at her.
She didn't move or answer so this time I put my alpha tone behind it," What happened?!"
She flinched back and everyone else covered their ears.
"I don't know," she replied as she took a step back towards the other banshees.
"What do you mean?" I asked her as I looked down at Leo.
"I mean that the Order is unbalanced, broken; a new one must be made," she shrieked and then along with the rest, screamed and vanished into the forest, leaving me with a broken Leo.
