Athens

Year after year,
you wandered the town,
lingering near the statue of Chronos.

I never understood why til I sat nearby,
and watched as the centuries flew by.

We never aged,
you and I.
Through wind, rain, or snow,
we were eternal.

The statue decayed,
and I watched as you cried,
though I simply couldn't understand why.
Chronos was missing the arm that held his clock,
and a crack in his leg meant that he would topple soon.

Athens was in ruin,
and no one was there.
Chronos no longer stood,
and you and I both had grey hair.

I finally understood,
when you turned and saw me with your tired eyes.
That I had followed you through time,
and we were the victims of a love that would never be.
