The bell on the shop door jingles as we enter the magic shop.

"...and then Brendon was like 'We're just friends.' when the entire school already knows that he and Sasha are dating..."

Cue Alexis "Lexi" Hallagan, my best friend, the biggest gossip in Greenview High. I nod my head, not listening to a single word she is saying. I pick up an old felt hat off of a shelf. I blow the dust off of it, and it goes right into Lexi's face. I laugh as she starts coughing.

"Thanks a lot Mandy."

"Sorry." I apologize in between giggles. I look up just in time to see an older gentleman shuffling towards us. He has long grey hair and walks with a cane.

"Are you young ladies looking for something?" I step forward as Lexi looks back down and continues texting.

"Um...yes. I have to do a report for school on Houdini, and I was wondering if you might have a book on him."

The man closes his eyes and nods his head. "Let me go check in the back." He shuffles off into the back section of the shop. As he goes into the back, my phone dings for the tenth time. Annoyed, I pull it out of my pocket and see who it is, even though I already know.

Ten unread messages from Grayson.

Wishing he would leave me alone, I unlock my phone and see what he's saying.

'A minute ago:Come on Mandy. Just text me back. I want to talk.'

I shut off my phone and shove it back in my pocket. I roll my eyes and sigh. Lexi comes over and hugs me.

"Is Mr. Perfect still bothering you?" I nod my head. "Don't worry. He'll get over you soon. You just have to stay strong." "Thanks Lexi." I feel a vibration and Lexi lets me go. Lexi turns on her phone and starts freaking out.

"What is it Lexi?" "Dustin just texted me and wants to get back together!" I roll my eyes as she begins to jump up and down. As she freaks out, the man comes back with a book. I walk up to the register as the man goes behind the counter.

"Sorry about my friend. How much do I owe you?" "Ten dollars." I pull out my wallet and pay the man. He hands me the book and I grab Lexi's arm and drag her out of the shop. As we leave, I hear the man say "Remember! With great power comes great responsibility!"

Lexi yanks her arm out off my grasp. "What the heck Mandy? You could have just told me we were leaving." I rub my arm. "Sorry." She rolls her eyes at me. 'Whatever. Hey listen. I have to run. My mom needs me to stop and pick up my brother." "Okay. See you later."

Lexi waves as she walks down the street. I take a deep breath and look down the opposite side of the street. It's okay Mandy. You can do it. It's not that hard. All you have to do is walk by Grayson's house. That's not so bad, right?
