Misty was 24 now. Ash was just two years behind her at age 22. The two had tried to stay friends after the whole "confession" thing happened, but they couldn't stay away from eachother. They started traveling together again with Brock until Ash became a pokemon master at age 18.

As for Serena, she and Clemont had been married for a year now. They hadn't really stayed in touch with Ash or Misty ever since, but they were fine without them. They still lived in Kalos, but traveled around a lot when they weren't working.
