Seraphina wasn't seeing the better portion yet. The war continued to get worse. It took an unexpected turn when Sean had been called upon for the draft. She could barely say goodbye. The officer might have thought she was related the way she sobbed.

Charles was becoming distant. She knew both of them could feel people's despair, but she had never been as attuned to people's thoughts like he was, since it was his only power. Her strength stayed mainly in her telekinetic abilities. He was suffering from the magnitude of sorrow the country was producing. Her own probably didn't help.

Seraphina did her best to spend most of her day with Charles, keeping his mind distracted from everything. For the most part, it worked.

It was a chilly Tuesday afternoon she had come home from buying groceries for the week as the school had sadly closed its doors and the staff went home to their families. When she parked the car in the spacey garage and had put all the foodstuffs in their proper place, she went on a search for Charles.

"Seraphina!"

She turned her head to see an astonishing sight at the top of the staircase. Or rather, on the level that split into two staircases to the next floor.

Charles was standing!

Albeit in pyjamas, but all the same. In her sudden joy for him she propelled herself up with her powers and kissed him with a hug. Then the full situation hit her.

"Charles, this is great, but how?" He seemed to expect the question and launched into his answer.

"Hank! Hank did this! He, he knew I was having--problems, with the voices, and he made a serum to diminish them, but it also gave me my legs." She narrowed her eyes at him.

"Diminish them by how much?" Charles looked suddenly sheepish. Seraphina kept her gaze, making her feel like a mother scolding a child.

"They're gone. I don't have access anymore," he admitted. Seraphina withdrew from their embrace.

"Gone! Why on earth would you sacrifice your power for peace. Your powers can create peace," She argued. The prospect of gaining the ability to walk versus losing his telepathy seemed minimal. It wouldn't solve anything. "If anything, this will make them worse the longer you can walk."

"This is a good thing! I haven't been able to walk for the past six years, Sera, this is a miracle. Never mind the bad."

She couldn't though, and he seemed to know that. She stood and watched while Charles took off down the stairs running out the front door and into the canopy of trees around the house. He looked funny. She laughed a little.

She and Hank soon discovered she was right. While Charles slept his powers returned and the voices of many were too much. He screamed, and she tried to soothe him but until Hank got the serum into his vein Charles wouldn't quiet down.

"Alright, you were correct," Charles sighed before positioning himself on the pillow again. She took his hand before settling down herself.

"I didn't want to be right."

Another couple of weeks passed by and proved that this serum that took away Charles' pain was also having a drug-like effect on him. Not only that, but alcohol began coming in the house only to be finished off the same day. Seraphina and Hank couldn't talk sense into him, and Charles fell deeper into the hole he was digging himself. It was a rare occasion he came out of his room, which she had stopped entering favoring the one she had had back when everyone first came here to defeat Shaw. Sadly, almost all of them were gone.
