Finally, two weeks had passed which felt like an eternity, and much to the objections of virtually everyone, I was allowed to go out and do some charity work out in Nox Aterrima with Charlotte and Jayden close by my side in case anything happened. It was the best I could do for them in the meantime.

Jayden was picked over Leyton because he was apparently the stronger of the two, and girls liked him so he could probably persuade them to help, especially since he didn't even want to be there.

We were helping to paint the walls of a reconstructed orphanage that was burned down during the invasion. I felt awful knowing those kids already didn't have a family and now their home had been destroyed. I had a soft spot for children and I knew this would be hard on them during this growing war, so the least I could do was give some of them their homes back.

Jayden huffed from across the room for about the tenth time in the past hour.

"Why don't you wanna do this?" I questioned, being careful to not get the lavender coloured paint on the white ceiling. I turned to Jayden who was putting in the least amount of effort while painting.

"This," he waved his hands around frantically, indicating the room painting, "is not my business," he hissed sharply.

"So you don't feel bad for the misplaced orphans, while you sit peacefully in the castle?"

"Not. At. All," he responded flatly.

"Come on, I know you have a heart in there somewhere." I smiled and got down off the ladder, paintbrush in hand, and approached Jayden stealthily.

Before I could even raise the brush to "accidentally" get paint on Jayden's top, he beat me to it, and I ended up with a huge stripe down my sleeve.

I gasped and did it right back to him.

"You think I couldn't hear you? I'm a vampire, or did you forget?" He smirked.

I rolled my eyes at both him and my stupidity for forgetting he'd hear me getting near him. Childishly, I stuck out my tongue before dabbing him with my paintbrush a couple more times before running to the other side of the room laughing.

We stood on either side of the table, paintbrushes at the ready.

"Hey, guys I'm back with the... photo... grapher," Charlotte announced, her tone getting less and less chirpy. She was shocked at first and then flustered as she frantically apologised to the man who looked amused and took his camera out to take pictures.

I thought maybe Jayden would stop now, but no, he was directly in front of me, brush in sight and grin in play. Before I could even protest, he grabbed me and started to attack with the paint, all I could do was laugh and attempt to struggle out of his grip. He eventually stopped and I ran away over to Charlotte to catch my breath. He definitely won that.

"Now that you've finished," Charlotte began, "this wants to ask you a few questions and take some pictures."

Straightening myself out as much as I could, I felt a little embarrassed knowing my hair was a mess, I was covered in paint and my clothes were probably all dishevelled. The man smiled nonetheless and offered me his hand to shake, he seemed quite excited, to be honest. He already had his camera out and at the ready.

A few hours later, we were done and packing away everything. Next, it was time to add decorations, to welcome the children back home. We were throwing a party for them tomorrow and I wanted everything to be perfect.

In the living room, towards the back, a table was set up where little snacks would go, and then, later on, the presents. There were banners on the walls and various coloured balloons in the walls and on the ground.
