Chapter Fourteen

(Madi's POV)

"Time for our old friends to wake up." Aslan said with a smile, then let out a mighty roar that echoed through the forest. The ground began to shake as the trees began to stir, finally moving after hundreds of years of holding still. Lucy and I looked at eachother, huge grins on our faces. Once Aslan was done, Lucy held her hands out to me. In each hand was a differenet item. In her left was a piece of paper, and in the other was my necklace I had gotten from Caspian during my last visit to Narnia.

"Caspian wanted you to have these." she said.

"Could you please put my necklace on for me? I don't think I can do it myself." I said with a sheepish grin. She smiled back and put the necklace on around my neck. The red gem hung loosely do I could breathe, but tight enough so that it wouldn't fall off. It was perfect.

"He also wanted you to have this." she said, handing me a piece of paper. Before I could say anything, Aslan breathed on it and the contents from the letter began to fill my mind. The piece of paper wasn't even un-rolled yet. I could hear Caspian's voice, as if he was reading the parchment to me himself.

"Dear Madeline,

I hope you're alright. I'm so worried, hopefully Lucy has given this to you in time, because there is something I need to tell you. I'm not sure I've told you this before, but if I have, then I'm going to say it again because it's worth saying more than once.

I love you.

I understand that there are others who are wanting to steal your heart, but I just want you to know that nomatter who you choose, I'll support you. If you want to be with Peter, fine. I'm okay with that, as long as you're happy. If you want to be with Edmund, it's alright. Go ahead, as long as you know you'll live a joy-filled life with him.

I miss you very much. I pray to Aslan that you'll come home to us alive. Please be safe, wherever you are.

Love,

Caspian"

I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face as Lucy stared at me.

"Aren't you going to read it?" she asked me, obviously not knowing that I had already heard it out loud. I looked over at Aslan, a small smile was on his face.

"I think I already know what it says. Thank you, Lucy, for bringing this." I said to her as Aslan blew on the paper, and I disappeared in thin air. Lucy's jaw dropped.

"Where'd it go?" she asked.

"Don't worry, I know where it is." I said to her, a small grin on my face as we began to walk back to the battlefield. After a few minutes of silence, I decided to speak up.

"Let's have a race." I said with a cat smirk. "And just to make things more equal, I'll carry Lucy."

"Alright, whenever you're ready." Aslan said with a mischievious smile. I knelt down so Lucy could get onto my back, and she jumped on.

"Ready?" I asked her.

"Yep." she said happily. Aslan and I stood side by side, getting in a good starting position.

"Oh your marks....." I started.

"Get set...." Aslan continued.

"Go!" Lucy shouted. We bolted quickly threw the forest. I could feel the wind blowing through my fur as I picked up speed. I looked to my side and saw that Aslan and I were tied. We made eye contact and he winked at me, causing me to run faster.

My adrenaline was pumping. Lucy shrieked happily as I jumped over a boulder, the both of us soaring through the air. I couldn't help but join in as we landed safely on the ground. I continued to run, realizing that Lucy and I were winning. Aslan was falling behind, but I knew he was just going easy on us.

I ducked beneith tree branches, making sure the I was low enough for Lucy to avoid the leaves and twigs as well. My paws thumped against the ground, matching the beat of my heart. I couldn't help but smile. I had never had this much fun with Aslan before. It was a nice change, especially since he was participating in the fun.

Suddenly were heard a loud BOOM!

We immediately stopped laughing. Aslan and I looked at eachother, stopping in our tracks.

"We're near the battlefield. Maybe Lucy should ride on my back now, just to make sure you two are both safe." Aslan suggested. I nodded and Lucy slid off. The loud blasts continued. It sounded like rock hittin rock. That wasn't a good sign.

"We'll head to the river." Aslan said, Lucy now on his back. I followed him obediently. We were now working our way along the outskirts of the field, avoiding any Telmarine soldiers if we could. I couldn't help but worry about Caspian. Where was he? How was he doing?

Was he alive?

As we neared the bridge, I noticed there was a large rock jutting over the edge of the river, like a little platform. It looked like it was a good ten to twenty feet up in the air, amking it a great look-out post.

"Aslan, I'm going to go check if I can see Caspian or  the other Pevensies. I want to make sure they're alright" I told him, running toward the rock.

"Be careful," he said, then paused. He looked at me, and I knew what he was thinking. I looked up at Lucy, a confused expression on her face as she tried to understand the silent conversation I was having with Aslan, using only our eyes.

"You know what to do." he said. I nodded, then ran toward the large rock. The path up wasn't very steep, making my job way easier. As I climbed up, I could see the edge of the bridge. Once I was up, I walked over the hard stone surface and looked around. I could see the other side of the river. The Telmarine soldiers were scurrying over to the bridge like a bunch of ants.

Once they saw Aslan and Lucy on the other side, they stopped. But it seemed like they hadn't seen me, which was a good sign. That would make the attack even better. He and I looked at eachother, and he nodded, giving me the signal.

I looked straight at the army, took a deep breath, said a silent prayer to myself, then let out the loudest roar I had ever roared in my life. It was louder than any fire alarm, louder than any earthquake, it would make an atomic explosion shrink into the shadows with embarassment.

I saw the Telmarines jump, even some of the Narnians as well, as I continued. Once I had stopped, I looked over at the crowd and realized everyone was looking at me. I gulped, hoping that I hadn't made a mistake of some kind. I looked over at Aslan, who smiled warmly back at me. I let out the breath of air I hadn't even known I was holding.

Then the Telmarines advanced.
