Roots

28 3 1

Forgot how

To speak to them

(nutrition slows)

To smile at them

(carbon dioxide is low)

To tell them I want them

(Soil turns to dust)

Forgot how

To listen to them

(too much rain)

To know them

(sun came out too fast)

To ask them

(so it burned my leaves)

Forgot how

To build the bonds

(temperature drops too low)

To tie the knots

(worms left the ground long ago)

To just speak up

(the dirt sits still now)

Forgot how

I did it before

(stalk can't handle the weight anymore)

To do it again

(the beans go black)

To make you feel loved

(they drop to the ground)

Forgot how

To call your name

(the wind too strong)

To chase you down

(no grass to stop the erosion)

To beg on my knees

(no bees for company)

Forgot how

To mix me with someone else

(the animals don't even sniff me)

To pick up my spirit

(four roots break off)

To show it to you

(five roots gone)

Forgot how

To make people stay

(six)

To do it more than once

(seven)

To know when to grab on

(eight)

And I'm sorry sincerely

For myself and for the ones

Who wanted me to remember

(down they go)

Because now

The nutrition's gone

The soil's gone

My leaves shriveled and frozen

And my beans decaying

My stalk bowed to the only one

That doesn't need me to remember

And so now all my roots are gone

I'm alright

I'm alright

I forget how

But I'm alright
