Charlie finally tires Max out after two hours of catch that afternoon.
Evan had gone out to the store on some kind of 'secret supply run' (Charlie suspects he meant that as code for 'liquor store' after discovering the lack of bourbon situation in the house). The relatively empty house puts Charlie in his favorite recliner, reading Corbet's again before he has to help his mom with dinner.
Charlie and Griffin had talked about a lot that summer, so he isn't surprised by what he's read so far. He's also pretty sure he knows what's going to happen in the next chapter, though, and he can't wait to read what Griffin has to say about it.
He catches himself smirking at his phone screen as he thumbs open chapter twenty-three.
