I woke the next morning in a cold sweat. My heart pounded fiercely in my chest as the nightmare slowly evaporated from my thoughts, leaving only the memory of fear behind. Turning over I placed my hand on the other side of the bed and found it cold. Where was Sam? For a moment my thoughts went into a frenzied panic. What if none of it was real? What if I had just imagined everything? My thoughts slowly calmed as I realized how ridiculous I sounded. I couldn't have imagined Sam. It wasn't possible. My mind couldn't have thought up something so perfect. Getting up from the bed I went to take a shower, letting the warm water wash away any remnants of the nightmare.

It had been so longs since I'd had one. I can't even remember what it was this time. They were always different, different memories, different moments of pain. The only thing that remained the same was him. He was always there, always hurting me, always saying those harsh words that tore at the very soul of my being. I let the warm water wash away my thoughts, sending them down the drain to oblivion. When I was done in the shower I pulled on a pair of leggings and a sweater.

Realizing it was Saturday I felt a jolt of excitement race through my body. Tonight was the charity ball. I caught a glimpse of the dress in my closet and couldn't help but smile. I had never been to a ball before. I wondered if it would live up to it's fairytale rendition.

I found Zoey and Adrian in the kitchen. I couldn't help but smile as they jolted apart, both of them sending me sheepish looks. When Adrian turned back around, I sent Zoey a wink. She rolled her eyes and stuck out her tongue. I was glad to see that she was feeling better. I could still see the worry and grief in her eyes, but at least she had enough energy to joke.

Making a cup of tea I sat down at the table across from Zoey.

"Where's Sam?"

Adrian sent me a reassuring look. "He had to go into the office to handle some things, but he'll be back in a few hours. He didn't want to wake you."

There was something that Adrian wasn't telling me. I could hear it in his tone of voice and in the way he wrung his fingers together under the table. I shrugged off the uneasy feeling. It was probably nothing.

"Well tell him that I'm stealing Rose for the day. We need to have some girl time." Zoey grinned and I couldn't help but feel a slight twinge of excitement. What diabolical plan had Zoey come up with this time?

"What are we even doing?" I asked Zoey as we hopped into the car.

"You'll see." She gave me a cryptic smile before starting the engine.

Zoey's phone began ringing and I reached for it. Seeing the caller ID, I let out a surprised gasp. Nolan? I briefly remembered my encounter with him several weeks back. Sam had told me that Nolan was Zoey's ex. So why was he calling her? Frowning I handed the phone over to Zoey. She saw Nolan's name and let out an exasperated sigh. Declining the call, Zoey handed the phone back to me.

A tense silence ensued. "Do you want to talk about?"

Zoey's face grew hard at my question. "Not particularly. Let's just forget about it."

"Okay." I felt slightly hurt at Zoey's harsh response.

Seeing my wounded expression, Zoey sent me a sheepish smile. "I'm sorry. That was uncalled for. It's not you. I just don't want to talk about him." The anger in her tone when she spoke of Nolan was so potent that I could practically feel it. There was obviously more going on there than I knew about.

When Zoey pulled into the parking lot of a fancy spa, I couldn't help my laugh. I should have guessed that this was what Zoey meant when she said girl time.
