Mrs Claude Johnson was a sombre woman, she was the heiress of the Johnson fortune and took her status seriously. My granny says that in her youth she was often surrounded by rumours of scandal but looking at the woman who sat across the room from me I would say those rumours were false. It's true that she has sad eyes that look longingly out of the window maybe reminiscing the past or simply watching the birds play in the blossom trees. Her hat covered most of her face and she wore a big brown fur coat shielding her from the world. Her husband is a very strict man who rarely spoke. It is said that the marriage was arranged for convenience and both parties were against it. It wasn't often that the Johnsons mingled with company and I see why. Everyone's eyes were on her, the room filled with whispers and rumours, she must feel like an ornament on display.

It's curious how still she sat her face blank from any emotion, her head was slightly tilted towards the sun to let it wash over her cheek. She looked trapped and lonely, her only relief is the warmth of the sun.
