Arriving in New York instantly put a smile on Mercy's face, she couldn't wait to visit her grandmother as she no longer was worried about her arrival. Finally, the arrived at her grandmother's apartment as Newt had promised her they would go there first. She rang on the doorbell once and a short elderly woman appeared in the doorway,

'Yes, hello?' Her voice was quite

'Gran?' Mercy asked hoping that she had the right apartment

'Mhm... oh' she gasped staring the woman with wide eyes

'Mercy? Mercy Langton?'

'Yes' she smiled

The door opened wider, signalling for them to walk in. Mercy and Newt followed the woman into the living room, they both sat down on a bright yellow couch as her grandmother sat across from them.

'Oh my goodness, Mercy, how are you?' The woman smiled

'Good, I suppose... how are you?'

'Fantastic, I've just retired and I'm traveling to London in a few days' she smiled

'London? Wow, gran! May I ask why?'

'I'm visiting your mother' her voice was small as she stared at the brown carpet under her feet, 'I haven't had the chance to visit her yet, I'm her mother and I just- I didn't even attended to her funeral' she sobbed

'Gran, its fine, as long as you visit her once it's okay... anyways, why did you retire?' Mercy tried to change the subject, her and Newt had just got there and her grandmother was already talking about the death of her mother.

'No, enough about me! I haven't seen you since you were a little girl, Er, who is this young man?' She finally took notice of Newt awkwardly sitting beside her, clearly looking uncomfortable.

'Oh, his name is Newt and he's my friend'  Mercy smiled looking at Newt as he smiled back

'Oh! Nice to meet you, Newt. How did you too meet?' She asked staring at the man

Mercy looked over at Newt again, he still looked highly uncomfortable and it wasn't helping that her grandmother kept turning her attention towards the man.

'Er... Hogwarts' he mumbled fiddling with the hem of his coat

'Hogwarts? What an amazing school, how's schooling going for the both of you?'

Mercy's smile faded, she was hoping the topic of Hogwarts wouldn't be brought up. Clearly, she didn't know about her being expelled.

'Oh, Er... I kinda, sorta got expelled' Mercy mumbled

Her grandmothers eyes widened with shock, at first she looked appalled then a slow frown appeared on her lips.

'Expelled? How? When?'

'About last year... I was sticking up for, Um, Newt here and I got expelled'

This was what Mercy had been worried about, this was why she had second thoughts about visiting her grandmother.

'Him? He's the reason you got expelled? Sir, are you still attended Hogwarts?'  Newt looked up at her worried, what was she going to say?

'No, I was expelled first... Mercy stuck up for me and got expelled as well...' he trailed off

'You got expelled... over a boy?'

'Here we go' Mercy sighed falling back on the couch, she was confused as to why her grandmother was acting in such a way. In all Mercy's memories she was never like this, yet, again she hadn't seen her grandmother in many, many years.

'How? Why would you get yourself expelled over a boy?' She huffed standing up 'and, what could he have done to get expelled and why would you be spending time with someone like him?'

Newt looked back and fourth from Mercy and Alice, from all the stories Mercy had told him about her grandmother, this was not the woman who she had been describing.

'With all do respect-' he was cut off by Alice shushing him

'Gran, he was framed for something he didn't do by a girl who was just plan mean. He was my only friend and I wasn't letting him go so easily' Mercy explained

'How dare you get yourself expelled, I'm sure Dumbledore had a word with you father! Explaining all this mishap'  she huffed again

Newt looked over at Mercy, both their faces fell. He knew how Mercy didn't like talking about her father since he ran out on her when she needed him most.

'Gran, father ran out after mother passed away! He blamed me so he just got up and left, haven't seen him since' Mercy frowned standing up straightening out her bright yellow coat, Newt stood up beside her as he wanted to leave as well.

'What? He just left?' Her grandmother's face fell as Mercy and Newt made their way to the door, 'yes, he left like everyone else. I'm surprised you didn't after hearing about me being expelled... it runs in the family apparently' Mercy huffed dragging Newt out outside the door before slamming it shut.

Mercy looked like she was going to cry, this wasn't the grandmother she remembered. She came here looking for some family and she left with none, once again she was let down.

'I'm sorry, Mercy' he whispered pulling her into a hug

'It's fine' she sobbed hugging him back

'Everything's going to be okay'

She felt a tear slip from her eye, once again, she was sick of being told that.

'No, no it's not. I-I'm sick of people lying to me, Newt' she mumbled

'It will, I promise'

'How do you know that-'  she was cut off by Newt doing something she never thought he would do...

He kissed her.
