A bit short, but a lot happens :)

30. Discovered

As soon as I hit nine months I swear my belly magically became massive overnight. It was like I went to sleep with a little bump and woke up with a hemorrhoid the size of Jupiter. I think it might have shocked Ben the most, who fainted when he awakened to the display.

Naturally, part of the deal I made with him made me have to sleep in the same bed as him.

We were leaving the tiny village in favor of a new life in America that evening, and I watched as the leader of PURE rushed around the room to pack. As he did this, I took the chance to fire questions at him that he otherwise would have dodged.

“So…” I began lightly, leaning back against the pillows of the bed. I couldn’t be of much use considering I couldn’t even see my toes. “Why are we in such a rush? I thought it’d still be another week until Astria makes its move, if it does in the first place anyways?”

“Three of my scouts notified me yesterday that ten Astrian spies were found circling around the camp. It’s obvious that they’re looking for an opening to charge in and take this base, as well as eradicate us.” He paused a second while folding one of his shirts. “That’s why we’re trying to at least get you out of here as soon as possible. You’ll be killed on sight by them for being a traitor, you know.”

“Yeah…” I sighed. There was a pause in conversation where I felt a wave of fatigue and closed my eyes.

No Emi! You must soldier on! There are still many questions that must be answered!

            “Hey, what happened to Alex?”

            “Who?”

“Alex. My ex-best friend Alex that tried to kill me and was crazy in love with you.”

“Oh.” He seemed thoughtful. “Oh yeah! I killed her. She was a traitor for disobeying orders so she was executed.”

I blinked a few times. “Just like that?”

“I will kill anyone that threatens you,” he informed me with a dark expression on his face. I blanched a little bit. Okay, maybe I misread this whole situation. Benjamin Ivory is most definitely insane. “Her family was a little annoyed about it, from memory, but it’s a tradition in PURE for these things to occur.”

“Are there any other major traditions like this?” I asked, worrying about what my twins were going to grow up with. Daily executions didn’t really the ideal environment for a child to grow up in.

“Of course. PURE is actually an ancient cult,” he explained proudly.

            “Ancient?”

“Yep. My ancestors started it way back in the Middle Ages when vampires slaughtered half their family. The two eldest men, who were cousins but raised as brothers, then started PURE after finding others who had experienced the same tragedy. As generations went by, we grew stronger and stronger by reproducing with magical beings to create a Halfling army. These Halflings could find their way to this continent due to their blood, and led us straight to the blood sucking monsters.
