His father's American, his mother's Japanese. This is my headcanon.
Unlike the rest of the Occult Club, he is on bad terms with the Russians, especially Zaytsev. They're not full-blown enemies, but they are adversaries.
Shin: I don't like them, but I don't hate them. I'd rather fight Kolosov than Zaytsev. At least Kolosov is capable of mercy.
Ryad. Yuri Zaytsev: No shit. Kolosov is in the armor corps. He doesn't see the worst of the fight. He mostly rolls through and sees the carnage I leave behind.
Ryad. Vasily Kolosov: [climbing out of tank] This is a T-72B3, not an Abrams.
It most certainly is not a Leopard 2A5.
Ryad. Yuri Zaytsev: The M1A1 Abrams is a worthy adversary. I'd rather fight a Leopard.
Ryad. Vasily Kolosov: Do not dare to underestimate German armor.
Ryad. Yuri Zaytsev: [pointing to Shin] What about him?
Ryad. Vasily Kolosov: I don't like him either.
Corleone: For fuck's sake, you shave with German razor blades.
Ryad. Yuri Zaytsev: German blades are the best in the business.
Corleone: A German tank is more fuel-efficient than Kolosov's hunk of crap.
Ryad. Vasily Kolosov: Really? How?
Corleone: The German-built Leopards are not restricted to diesel fuel. Like their American counterparts, the Leopard's engine can run on a wide variety of fuels.
