forty-five; me and you against the world

"Forget it Ben! Get the thought out of your head," you fume, red-rage vision covering your line of vision.

You've seen his thoughts, you've fought the walls he erected around his brain, you know he's already accepted his death.

You grab him and shake him until he is forced to look into your eyes. "Agree with me Ben, you're not doing anything that reckless, that dumb. There's just no way."

His eyes go cold, almost frozen over, as if in his mind he's already there, he's already set the plan in stone.

You grit your teeth and push him away, turning away from him, your fingers lost in the tangles of your hair. Hot, seemingly steaming tears are quick to well up in your eyes and you furiously wipe them away on your sleeve. There is nothing to cry about. He isn't offering himself to anyone; isn't battling endless waves of stormtroopers on his own.

"We need to establish a communication link with Hux. We need to know if that poison is in your system already," he states, his back to you as he looks further out across the sandy horizon.

You two were a mile or so away from your mother's house. Kylo had rushed out, saying he needed a second to clear his thoughts and focus on a plan- he had really stepped out to calm the waves of apprehension in his chest, to stop the bubble of anxiety in his stomach from growing any bigger. You had found him swinging his lightsaber around, the glowing cherry red death stick pulsating violently, no doubt mirroring his mood.

At least he's not destroyed anything else. He's grown so much, you had thought, looking at him. From throwing childish tantrums and wrecking control rooms, to distancing himself to clear his mind.

However, there's no argument in your mind, no slightest doubt. His plan needs to be changed. How can he even think of letting his life end just like that? At the hands of the people that turned him to the Dark side? How can he ignore any prospect of a future with you?

A future- the future; you have to make him think about the future.

The lie forms in your mind before you can even comprehend and make sense of the chain of thoughts. A black lie, but a necessary lie. Oh, how necessary it is. You're ready to say anything, plead anything to make him change his mind.

"I'm pregnant," you blurt out.

Kylo's sabre drops into the hot, camel-brown sand, instantly extinguishing itself.

The ground shakes, as if the drop of his lightsaber made the earth angry.

"What?" The baffled question simultaneously leaves his lips as two gigantic ships land in your line of vision, close to the village here on Jakku.

You instantly block your mind, a wall stronger than concrete- he cannot know you are lying. It doesn't take much mental effort; you had closed him off so often.

"Luna, Vega, let me see your thoughts," he says through gritted teeth, infuriation taking over his body.

"No! You won't know the truth if you don't agree to work this out together-"

"Work what out together?! There's nothing to work out, you might be already dying, Snoke is here," he points to the now-opening ships, points to where the frightened screams are coming from. "You're lying to me Vega, there is no other life form inside you."

"I'm late, Ben." The lies feel heavy on their way from your mind to your mouth, but they roll easy off your tongue.

"Late to what?"

You cross your arms and shift your weight to one leg, giving him an impatient look.

"That." He scratches the facial hair that had started growing on his jawline, the worry and anxiety shadowing across his features making him look older. "Don't lie to me, Vega. Let me read the truth in your head."

"Are you willing to take the risk of not being there for your child?" Why don't you want to live and fight to stay with me? It's easy to fake a tear or two- because you're not really faking them at all.

Kylo has no time to answer as a booming voice projected over some speaker attached to the ship says, "This is the end of the line Kylo Ren. Report to base with LN-1311 or this whole planet will be eradicated."

A warm current of air blows against you both, and Kylo places his hands on his face, looking upwards. "I can't watch you die Vega, I can't," he croaks, his eyes brimming with tears.

"I won't die," you stammer. "I'll die if something happens to you."

The tears on both sides of his face tumble easily to his jawline, where little drops form at the sharp angles.

"I love you," he says, his voice barely audible, and then, casting his wet eyelashes to the ground where his lightsaber lay, he adds "Call your lightsaber."

General Hux casts his glance at the row after row of soldiers who have been trained their whole life to do one thing and one thing only. To kill.

So surely he cannot ask them to do anything less today? Surely Snoke will understand if his prized student happens to die? It would have been during a battle after all.

A battle against his master, nonetheless.

Hux faces the crowd. White, faceless helmets blend in with other white, faceless helmets, forming one whole block of white. No individuality. No room for deviants. He clears his throat and begins.

"Today marks the day that the First Order establishes the fact that we do not tolerate traitors. We do not tolerate betrayal. You are here because you are the lucky ones, you are here to make the galaxy kneel to the First Order. The whole galaxy shall one day kneel to us, shall one day stop resisting. You are here to make it happen. Supreme Leader Snoke speaks nothing but the rightful truth. Kylo Ren must be brought to an end. He has caused too much trouble already. He has betrayed the First Order- the very same order that you are lucky to work for. He has escaped with an equally powerful Force-user. She must not be killed. Wise leader Snoke has yet to wish to dispose of her. She still seems to be of use. The betrayer Kylo Ren is not. We have tolerated him aboard the Finalizer for long enough."

The name Kylo Ren pained him to say. Holy Hoth, he hated the name.

"Go forward and destroy anyone who steps in your path. This village shall cease to exist by the time you're finished with it. Go and bring me back Ren's lifeless body!"

The stormtroopers salute their command-giver, and in one swift movement, all turn their backs to him, awaiting further instruction from outside the ship.

"Sir?"

Hux barely hears the female voice as a strange feeling of pride swells up in his chest.

The girl finds the courage to steady her voice. "General Hux."

"What is it," Hux snarls without bothering to look at where the voice is coming from.

"Urgent news from Supreme Leader Snoke."

This time Hux looks at the girl, in her arms a sheet of glass with typed words spread across it. He snatches it from her shaking hands and sees her off with a flick of his hand.

The words on the tablet drain the colour from Hux's already pale face, he drops the glass and wastes no time to alert his sub-ordinates.

BATTLE TURNED INTO A WAR.

REBELLION ALERTED.

REBELLION INCOMING.

AMONG THEM- THE LAST JEDI.

LUKE SKYWALKER.
