The curtains rose with a defining swish, and two figures stood poised for a show.
"Thank you, Thank you." Said one, his words radiating power and control. "You're too kind."
The other smiled excitedly, brandishing a thick, dusty book to her murmuring audience. Dark, inky tendrils poured from it like sparks, causing the onlookers to clap and cheer with anticipation.
"I will now pull a shadow creature from the Codex Umbra."
The tall man reached for the tome, but his fingers sunk into it's pages like water. With a determined grin, he pulled back, but stumbled forth as something evil wrapped around his wrist.
Horrified, the audience began to shriek, as spectre-like arms snatched the performer and sucked him into the book's depths, before grabbing his assistant as well.
There was a soft laugh, as the Codex snapped shut, and all went silent under a deafening darkness.
