Reaching for the Stars

The streets were nearly empty, and the moon was the only one to
watch upon me,
guiding my steps on new alleys
I've never explored before.

After taking a few more corners,
leaving back the echoes of my own footsteps,
I stopped in front of a block of flats.

A couple of lights were still on,
and I hoped that the one I was looking for was off—

like some sort of reassurance that all was well.

But instead,
they flickered
and danced,
foretelling tragedy.
