The Franklin Food City Supermarket was where I served my afternoons twice a week. The pay was decent which was the only good thing compares to the work. My boss Martin's an under-paid over-weight middle age man whose wife left him for a bartender and he scared me...he only has one facial expression and he'll snap at you if you look at him sideways.
"Hey when your done here, go and start facing isle five" Facing- is the extremely boring task of straighten out everything in the isle on both sides...great fun!...not!
Ugh! I sighed dramatically finishing up with a customer handing over the bag and change, I flipped the light above my register telling everyone that I was open.
I walked across the registers bumping into a man holding the hand of a little girl about the age of six. She struggled against his grasp he grimaced struggling with the rope that was coiled around his arm- reminding me of another man. Images flashed past me dark and damp.
Isle five was the bathroom products on one side, and the other was divide into confectionary and organic foods.
I started moving the toothpaste boxes into their original spots when the sleeve of my shirt slid down my am reveling a red mark across my wrist, identical to the one on my other hand. I dropped the toothpaste and forced my sleeve down.
It was so ironic, the man with the rope and then my scars appearing, it so random but it made sense to me.
It sacred me, thinking about Dana Rice missing. She's six, the same age that I was when-
"What are you doing?" came a voice rough voice I turned around to see Larry, Martin's half-wit son. I picked up the toothpaste box and continued to file them into order.
I had made it down to the soap when I herd footsteps approaching I turned my head to see whoever was approaching but when I did there was nobody there, I turned my attention back to the soap. Then I saw a dark flicker out of the corner of my eye. I turned around and Nick was casually leaning against a rack of Hair brushes, looking at me as if he'd been there the whole time.
"I never thought of you as the type to work in the field of produce."
"Hardly" I said "That department is for hippies only, my job description goes as far as making small talk to pitiful customers...like you" I said, trying to pull a soap box forward it bumped the one in front of it and it fell from the self and landed on the ground with a thud. I groaned and bend down to pick it up, when I looked up Nick was standing next to me.
"Jesus, I know our happy to see me, but save something for the other customers."
I half smiled "Your lucky that my job does not allow me to punch customers"
"You wouldn't?" He challenged
"Oh, but I would" I smirked "And I'll enjoy it"
He purposely pushed a soap box out of line, I nudged him aside and straightened it out again "What are you doing here?"
"Well I'm here to ask you out!" he said straightforwardly.
If he didn't reach out and hold my hand I'm sure I would have dropped another soap box "Your kidding"
"No" he said plainly keeping a clam expression.
"I don't really get this whole Chuck Bass persona" I said "I mean one minute your all, leave me alone I'm dangerous, Adam Lambert like and know you like the ultimate ladies man" my confidence was slowly going down, as I stood in front of him in my hideous orange work smock, when I get home I'll burn it.
"You do have a point, but still are you going to break my heart"
I smiled and nodded.
"Just go out with me"
I shook my head "Nope"
"Come one," he begged "Just one date"
I continued to shake my head.
"What will it take for you to go out with me?" he got to his knees "How about this?" he outstretched his arms "Will you go out with me?"
"No"
He took off his baseball cap and put it over his heart "I bet you cant refuse this" he hummed the tune to 'I will always love you'- by Whitney Houston, he took it a deep breath when he came to the chorus "And I...
Will always love you " he pelted out of his lungs, people ihn the isle, turned to wards hi startled, a women further down the isle dropped her shampoo, and her baby started to cry.
He was that bad of a singer, he scared he that way.
"And I... Will always love you " he went on again.
"Ok Stop, " I begged, hoping my boss wouldn't come around the corner.
He shook his head and to the tune said "only if you agree to go out with me!"
"Never!" I hissed.
He shrugged "I hope life treats you kind And I hope you have all you've dreamed of And I wish you joy and happiness But above all this I wish you love "
He was coming up on the chorus again and I couldn't take anymore "Fine" I squealed. "I'll go you with you"
He stopped singing, and stood up putting his cap back on his head "Sorry honey, I didn't hear what did you say?"
"I said 'I'll go out with you'"
"Sure if you want" he didn't even seemed amused, like it was all a game. "I'll pick you up Friday night at 7." he leaned in and kissed me on the cheek, he did it too quickly so I didn't have enough time to pull away. "see you then"
He turned and walked away without another word.
"Don't call me Honey again" I said out loud.
He smirked "Also I forgot to mention" he said, once he was at the end of the isle "Nice smock, honey"
