Chapter Eighteen

The day I got told Jackie would be released soon became a blur shortly after that when I woke up sharply one night to the noise of a flat line. My heart jolted out of its place, I had never gotten out of my seat so quickly. Jackie wasn't breathing. She was dead. I was crying faster than I thought tears could even produce and I was pressing the button above her bed for a nurse more than recommended. Soon, two nurses and three doctors rushed in and began performing resuscitation. I was eventually shooed out against my will and was only able to watch through the small rectangular window in the door to her room. They took forever, trying and trying again. The word 'fail' was echoing in my head and so was the sound of that flat line. And all I wanted from that moment was for that obnoxious beeping to return. And to my relief.

It did.

The seventh time they resuscitated her resulted in her taking her first breath. I will forever remember the sight or her chest rising and falling back down, I will never forget the flood of relief that ran through me. She was back. I rushed in after that, thanking the doctors and nurses very briefly before running to Jackie's side where I held both of her hands in mine and promised to never leave. Not until the day she came out. And that's exactly what I did.

"Thank you for everything you've done." Jackie smiles at me as I help her into my car, taking her crutches and putting them on the back seats.

"You don't have to thank me, I was always going to be there."

"Well, I'm thanking you anyway." She giggles, sitting down with a sigh. We eventually get back to my flat where Joe and Caspar sit impatiently, they've both been there for Jackie and I more than I would've expected. It's nice to be back at the flat, I haven't left the hospital since she arrived. There isn't the stench of death and illness, nor is there that stupid beeping!

"Y/N!" Caspar cheers, coming over to us both and hugging me before helping Jackie onto the sofa.

"You're home." Joe smiles, kissing me and guiding me over to where Caspar and Jackie are sat already chatting. And when I sit down, we all talk and laugh for ages until seven when Caspar looks at his phone and stands up in a rush.

"I have a date I got to go to." He informs us with a small smile.

"A date?" Joe asks, raising his eyebrows.

"Yes, I met this girl called Maddie on Tinder, I was thinking about doing a video with her afterwards?"

"Wait--what?"

"Like, talking about our date..." He says awkwardly. "Is it weird?"

"I think you should do whatever you're comfortable with." I break in with a smile.

"Thank you, Y/N."

"Have fun!" We all cheer as he leaves the flat, a little spring in his step.

Hope you enjoyed! :)
