Betty
Sabrina tilts her body in my direction with her phone in the air, making it painfully obvious that she is trying to get a selfie with me. I flick to the next page on my Kindle and smile like an idiot. They arrived here late last night, so I didn't get the chance to say hello, and when I did see them this morning, Sabrina was too shy to speak to me.
"You okay there?" I say, causing her to jump forward and turn to me with wide eyes.
Sabrina's cheeks turn pink. "Fine," she squeaks.
I tilt my head to the side. "Do you want a picture, sweetie?"
"No!" she lets out a high-pitched giggle walking around in a few circles, stepping forward after. "Would you mind?"
I beam. "Sure, get your bum over here."
"You are so sweet. Exactly like I imagined. DeDe told me you were, but I thought she was only saying that because she's my sister. But, she's right you are so sweet. Wait...did I just say that?"
Dexter shouts from the kitchen. "Chill your beans."
I smile over at him, and he winks, stuffing a piece of bread in his mouth.
Sabrina sits down on the sofa next to me. "Can we Snapchat?"
I nod, moving my head closer to hers. "Sure thing."
Sabrina glances over at Dexter and then back to her phone. "Will you be in it too?"
"Why not," he nods, coming over to us.
I move up the leather sofa, so I'm in the middle with Sabrina to my left and Dexter to my right. I take hold of her phone, trying to balance it between my fingers without the unicorn case getting in the way. Dexter moves back a fraction so his face can reach the camera, while Sabrina almost sits on my lap, her previous shyness forgotten.
"Ready?" I ask, waiting to press the button in the middle of the screen.
"Wait!" Sabrina cries, fluffing with her hair. "I look like I haven't brushed my hair in weeks."
I smile. "You look lovely."
"Don't lie," she giggles, getting back in focus.
"I wouldn't lie to you," I cut my eyes to Dexter. "Tell Sabrina how beautiful she looks."
I watch the young teens eyes bug out of her head.
Dexter gives his lazy smile. "You look good, babe."
A high-pitched sigh escapes into the air, and then Sabrina covers her mouth with her hand. "Let's just take the picture, shall we?"
Dexter catches my eye on the screen and can't help but smile at her sweet innocence. Sabrina is a real treasure to be around.
"I'm ready when you are," Dexter rests further back into the sofa.
"On the count of three," I say, showing my teeth when I smile. "One. Two. Three!"
I take several pictures, all of which we pull different facial expressions. Pouting, snorting, smiling, showing our teeth. It gives Sabrina a good few to choose from. We film a quick video message, and then Dexter climbs off the sofa, stumbling to the side and then onto the floor.
I get up. "You okay, Dex?"
"Yeah," he shakes his head. "I lost my footing."
I frown.
"You did take your Insulin today, didn't you?" I whisper, watching him stand.
Dexter laughs. "Yeah, Betty."
