CHAPTER NINE

WE'RE GONNA LIVE FOREVER

"BISHOP AND MONTANA, SITTING IN A TREE," Blake chants, stealing a fry from my tray, even though there are plenty of them in his, and I scowl, wishing I hadn't opened my stupid mouth about this

"BISHOP AND MONTANA, SITTING IN A TREE," Blake chants, stealing a fry from my tray, even though there are plenty of them in his, and I scowl, wishing I hadn't opened my stupid mouth about this. He sips his Coke, surprisingly ignoring the chatter from all the Harvard and MIT students around us, as this McDonald's restaurant is almost the halfway mark between the two universities. When I don't answer, he continues, "K-I-S-S—"

"Can you stop?" I beg, wanting to be immune to the devious grin dancing on his lips. A group of girls sends a curious glance towards our table, but he pays them no attention, never looking away from me. "Stop looking at me like that."

"Monty"—he leans forward, taking my hand, the one I'm not using to hold my cheeseburger—"you have to give me something, okay? I'm sitting here, in this McDonald's, on a Friday evening when I have an awful lot of college work to do, so you need to give me something to think about other than college. Okay? Because all I have so far are unseasoned fries, bland Coke and no explanation regarding your . . . crush."

"It's not a crush," I protest, my voice an octave higher than usual, and he twirls his cup around, while I don't find the courage to tell him that will only leave his drink even duller. "It's . . . I don't know. I just like being around him, much like I enjoy being around Faye or Jared, for example." I finish my burger and he doesn't say a word, silently asking me to elaborate, and I mentally groan, hating how he always manages to make me talk. "It's not a big deal."

"Maybe not, but you and Jared mostly study together when we're not eating, sleeping, in class or playing snooker, while you and Faye"—his lips twitch almost imperceptibly at the mention of her name—"study and crash on each other's beds every now and then. I don't think you've ever crashed on Bee's bed."
