Chapter 16

I get up and walk to the dining room where Effie and Haymitch are. Though Haymitch sits with his head on the table hungover

"Haymitch!"

"What?" He slurs.

"Can you give this to Peeta when he wins..." I say quietly. That gets him to raise his head. I notice Effie suddenly staring at me from the corner of my eye.

"Sorry what, Sweetheart?" Haymitch really needs a shave.

"When Peeta wins, give him this letter from me," I state clearly. I know how awful hangovers can be. Right after the Games, I had quite a few hangovers.

"A love letter really Katniss?" Haymitch asks smirking.

"Yes, believe it or not, some of us around here have hearts." That hit home exactly as I meant it to. He doesn't need to judge me.

"Where is the boy?" He asks gruffly.

"Peeta is in the shower," I answer.

"Have you thought this through Katniss? I mean to you-" I cut him off.

"I'm very aware of that. And I've thought it all through, but it's still the same decision."

"Sweetheart you can't die, think of him." Does he not understand me?

"Haymitch I am thinking of Peeta! If I die, he can go live a happy life, get married, have kids, whatever he wants!" My voice has risen to a shout.

"He doesn't want to get remarried! Katniss, that boy will never forgive you if you do this. Think about it this way: If he wins the games one person wins. If you win the games t-" Haymitch starts.

"Excuse me? You promised we would try to let him win!" I interrupt. Please be distracted, Effie... A very confused Effie stares at us. She starts sounding out words that may fit and start with a T.

"Two." She sits there confused again. I would distract her and yell at Haymitch, but her confused look is interesting.

"You are.." She gets out before her eyes go teary. Apparently, she does have a heart and brain. My head quickly turns to Haymitch. I sneakily grab the knife from the table.

"You said you wouldn't say anything! Not to anyone! You bastard!" I scream and lean toward him. A firm hand wraps around my waist.

Peeta.. Why does he show at the absolute worst moment? One of my worst moments anyway. I try to lean forward, but he merely throws me over his shoulder. In the commotion, I lose my knife.

"Its the most logical Katniss!" Haymitch shouts as Peeta carries me down the hall.

"Peeta Mellark put me down!" I shout. He laughs.

"Nope, you need to calm down."

"What if I actually want breakfast?"

"Then you'll be happy to remember that we can have food delivered to our rooms." He says smugly. He loves victory, doesn't he? Though I must admit, he looks good in it.

I do get breakfast and calm down somewhat. I'm still pissed off at Haymitch though. How can he do that? He promised me he wouldn't tell. And no amount of telling Peeta that will let him allow me to run Haymitch through with a knife. That's not the problem though the problem is if he broke that promise will he actually try to save Peeta over me? He already said he agrees with Peeta. No, he didn't say he agreed with him. He said that he saw it more logical. Not the same thing. At least I hope not.
