Narrator's POV

"Oh my God! He proposed?" Nell squealed at her best friend who entered the bullpen for the first time in almost three months, spotting the diamond ring she wore

"Yeah" Kensi replied with a smile "Last weekend" She beamed, holding her son against her chest

"I'm so happy for you" said Nell "Both of you, congratulations guys" being mindful of the sleeping baby she gently hugged Kensi

Sam: we're all very happy for you two

Both the detective and his fiancee received congratulatory hugs from the teak. After a stressful past few weeks, and losing one of their own (Granger) it was nice to have some good news for a change, and if anyone deserved to be happy it was Kensi and Deeks

Callen: it's no secret that I wasn't thrilled to find out that you two were dating, but he obviously makes you happy, and if anything your relationship made your partnership stronger. I'm happy you found someone you love enough to want to spend the rest of your life with, even if it's this guy

"I know you only say that out of love" said Deeks, reaching for his son "What time does the service start?" Deeks questioned, turning the focus of the conversation back to the assistant director who's funeral they were all so neatly dressed for.

Callen: as soon as Hetty gets here we'll head out together. It's so hard to believe that guy's gone. He wasn't much for words but he'd always managed to be there when we needed him most

"Definitely. When Kens and I weren't on the best of terms he was the only person who knew something was wrong and offered to listen. When I had to deal with those painful memories of losing my son he offered to listen. He was kinda like a second really badass dad" said Deeks

Sam: yeah, he was. I'm really gonna miss that guy

"We all will" said Nell "We do this every day knowing the risks but never had I imagine one of you not coming back. He died protecting our team, our family. That's something I'm sure neither of us will forget"

"Ladies, gentlemen it's time" said Hetty, appearing out of nowhere in her black pants suit. The team followed the operations manager outside of the building where they took two separate limos to the crowded church where their assistant director's body was laid out

The church was overflowing with the older man's former colleagues and friends. He didn't have much family outside of the team, but the team's family were all present, leaving not one empty seat at the service "You brought the girls" Deeks spoke to his ex wife who shot him a sympathetic smile

"Of course. Everyone came actually, these two just wanted to sit with you" she told him, leaving the twins beside him before finding her seat in the back. The service was lengthy and consisted of many heartfelt memories shared by the people who knew him best. Once leaving the church they walked through the graveyard. Sam, Callen Deeks and Eric carrying Granger's casket to his final resting place. Each placed roses on top of the coffin, saying their final farewells

"I didn't think this would be so hard" Kensi spoke, with tears streaming down her cheeks. Since she lost her father she wanted to ask Granger to give her away on her wedding day, but now he too was gone "Why are we even doing this if we can't protect each other?" She asked. Hetty knowing Kensi would be the first to break down had offered to hold baby Noah who was far too little to understand what was happening around him

Unexpectedly Deeks' twin daughters provided comfort for not only their father and soon to be stepmother, but for the team as well "it's okay to be sad" said Mia "You lost someone you loved, but mommy says he's living with the angels, that means he's always gonna be protecting all of you"

Sam: that's a great way of looking at it, thank you Bella

"I'm Mia silly" She corrected. Bella was too busy hugging Nell who became very emotional seeing Granger's casket being lowered into the ground. Realizing that she'd never see him again, never hear his voice. It may not have seemed like he'd been close with the agents and analysts, but he'd had a great impact on each of them. He became their family, and it's always hardest saying goodbye to a loved one

Sam: I love the way you're raising your girls to be so kind and considerate. They truly are beautiful inside and out. That's a rare and precious quality

"Can't take full credit, their mom's the kindest most loving person I've ever met." Said Deeks, watching hetty stare blankly at the spot where granger's casket was laid. They all knew no matter how close the agents and analysts were with the assistant director they all knew it was Hetty who was most affected by his passing

Callen: you ready to go Hetty?

Hetty: one moment mister Callen

She handed Noah over to Callen before walking over to drop one final rose atop the casket "goodbye old friend" she spoke before heading back over to her team. The loss they'd felt was a great one, he was most certainly irreplaceable in their eyes, but it was time they headed out.
