All he saw was black.Left and right, above and beneath, front and back.
He tried moving his fingers, but he couldn't. He couldn't feel much of anything.
In the blackness, time didn't exist.Everyday, a voice would visit him. It filled him with warmth. Warmth he wasn't sure he would feel again.
The other day, she was speaking about how she missed him. He wanted to smile, hold her and say he missed her too. But, he couldn't.
Today, she visited him again.
In her sobbing was the sound of a heart breaking. Hearts don't snap like brittle caramel or burst like an overfilled balloon. A heart breaks in the heaving waves of a new disturbing reality that has arrived uninvited. It is the one in which their child no longer lives, or their partner is terminally sick. It is entering a life they can't bear and so they break. They aren't the same again, there's just a part of them that had to die so that the rest of them could carry on their duties to the other people they love. So, as he listened to her trembling cries, tears flowing unchecked, there was part of him breaking too. If she wasn't the same, then neither would he be. That's what happens when you love someone, right?
Their happiness is a part of your own.
And he wanted to be part of hers.
What he didn't know was, he already was. And he always will be.

Warmth.A comforting, heart-warming warmth enveloped his right hand, and he felt something soft and tender covering them. It made him curious, and he opened his eyes to see a world of colour, in the white of the ceiling.
He stared at it blankly for ten good minutes and yawned, left hands covering his mouth before he slowly turned his head towards his right. Unable to comprehend anything, nothing at all.
Only the warmth and happiness, only the hope, that the sleeping female brought with her.
Because sometimes, you don't need to process anything, when you have the world before your eyes, and in that moment, she was before his, and only his.
In her sleep, she had smiled. It was then that he was reminded- smiles really do have power. They can reach places the sun can't and warm the very soul.
With his lips curved upwards, he awoke her with a soft, smile-filled voice that held the world in its words-
"Thank you for waiting."
