starry eyes

"look up,"
she said,
her finger pointed upwards
to the stretching sky,
who wished to hold all the unknown,
and her arm held frozen
because the summer heat
had escaped from our lips
yesterday night.

dots of twinkling lights
were scattered upon the dawning morning
like the light freckles speckled
over the bridge of her nose.
though their numbers weren't great,
the brightness they shined over us
was better than the darkness
we'd always had every other night.

i stared wistfully at the ultramarine waves
painted upon our earth
and the silver flicked on them
before they crashed,
but a desire for more
tugged and pulled at my heart,
the longing to see these stars in your eyes
once more.
