Long, Long ago, a god and a mortal fell in love. Helios, the sun god, came down to Earth meeting a kind noble lady named Rosetta. Helios had to leave Earth, leaving his love and his child, who he had not known existed, behind. When the time had come, Rosetta gave birth to the child, her sporting her father's golden locks. The towns witch, Dame Gothel, had heard the elder witches speak, stating the magical properties that the child held. So, in the middle of the night, Gothel steals the child, locking her away in a tower where no one would ever find her. She gives her the name Rapunzel. Gothel learns that her hair holds a healing property, thus wanting her power. When she finds out that she can't cut her hair or the magic will be gone, Gothel lets the child's hair grow.

Over the years, Rapunzel's long golden locks grow immensely. Gothel blocks all exits but one window, allowing Rapunzel to throw down her hair for her to climb up. On the eve of her twentieth birthday, she begs to leave the tower, causing great anger to settle in Gothel. Her 'Mother' says no, making Rapunzel depressed, thinking she will never leave her prison. The same day, her mother leaves to go off to another village to scavenge new supplies for the tower.

That day, she meets Klaus Mikaelson, a British fellow with a deep, dark secret. Rapunzel is scared as to why there was a man in her home and curious as to why her mother had lied to her. Klaus convinces her to leave her tower, off to explore the world.

But when Gothel finds her gone, she goes mad. She hunts down the girl, trying to convince her to go back. When she refuses, Gothel cuts her hair, placing a curse on her. She keeps her powers but is put under a curse, a curse Gothel had stolen from many other witches before her, that is, the sleeping curse. She is put to sleep, causing Klaus great grief. She will be awoken in a new age, not knowing when. Klaus locks her in a coffin, hoping one day she will walk beside him once more.
And that day... is now.
