and in rebellion
I have almost always
turned out the lights.
almost always stayed quiet.
almost always
planted orchards and vineyards
somewhere
in the back of my mind.
named every tree
and fruit and vine
after all of the beautiful things
I have ever loved.
watered them
before bed,
reminding myself
over and over
how much I never
needed you.
