"What the fuck is that?" I whisper to myself. I can hear a faint rustling in the trees, and there's no breeze. I step closer, wincing at the loud crunch my feet are causing as I step on the forest floor.
I peer past a bush, to see leaves twitching on the floor. Then a head pokes up, and I laugh. It's only a bird, and a pretty one at that. She's bright yellow, and hopping around. I stop laughing when I realise that she's hopping because she's injured. I inch closer, slowly as to not startle the bird.
I get very close, an arms distance away, when I hold out my hands. My palms are flat but slightly cupped, and I manage not to move out of surprise when she hops into my hands. I can see one of her legs bleeding, and her claws look all messed up. I don't know anything about birds to know further injuries. There's a kid in my english class who knows, Stan, but I have no idea where he would be on a summers day.
I decide to head to the library. The librarians are lenient towards me due to how often I'm actually there. I manage to hop on my bike and begin to pedal with one hand when I see Stan and his friends flying across the pathway on their bikes.
"Stan! Hey, Stan!" I shout. One of his friends turns towards me, and I recognise Eddie. Poor kid. His lips move, and then Stan turns as well, his ears flushed pink.
"(Y/n)!" He pedals towards me, and I stop my bike.
"Stan! Thank God! There's this bird, and she's gorgeous but she's injured, and I don't know what species or the extent to the injury, and God, please help." I say breathlessly.
"What? Oh! Is that her? Wow!" Stan coaxes the bird out of my hand and into his, and I stare at him for a moment. His curly hair is falling in front of his eyes, and his chocolate eyes are intent and focussed on the bird.
"(Y/n). I don't want to alarm you, but this bird is Palila." He says seriously. I remain expressionless.
"Oh. She's incredibly endangered. I've never seen one in person before. Isn't she beautiful?" He looks so happy.
"Yeah. Yeah, she is. Do you know how to fix her? Will she get better?" I ask. I wring my hands together, hoping, praying that this bird will be okay.
"Yeah, I do. Lucky you found her. A couple more hours and this would be permanent. Hang on a second." Stan turns around. "Hey! I have to go home. Shut up, Richie! It's not like that! See you all tomorrow!" He yells, then turns back to me.
"D-Do you want to come over? Then you can keep an eye on her." He suggests.
"Man, I'm sorry. I was meant to be shopping, and my mom will kill me if she knew I was in the barrens. Maybe another day." I smile. "Let me know once she's fully recovered, yeah? I want to hear excellent news."
"Aye aye, captain." Stan salutes me with his spare hand. "See you around?"
"For sure. See you, Stan." I hope on my bike and grin at him as I pedal past him. I groan as I turn around.
"Forgot the groceries." Stan laughs and I beam back at him.
"Thought so. See you! Say goodbye, Egg." He holds up his hand. I snort.
"You named her Egg?"
"She's my child! She deserved a name." He says indignantly.
"She's my child, too!" I fake glare at him.
"We shouldn't be arguing in front of our child. Accept the name or say goodbye to custody." I snicker.
"Fine! Bye Egg! Bye Stan!" I'm still laughing as I pedal away to the grocery store. Who could have known by the end of the day I'd have saved a birds life and made mine a lot better.
