VARUS WAS well aware of what his position as a Higher Noble entails more than anyone else. The responsibilities and sins his hands have to carry along with this title, even while knowing about them before he became what he is today — he still chose to embark on this long journey to serve as a blade for the Pureblood known as Black Raven Eclipsing the Starless Sky.

He knew it well... Yet every time he had to deal with those who stood in his way, he couldn't help but mourn.

For his own brethren that decided to betray their Lord. For their own selfishness that ruined them. More than anything, he mourned for their obsession and wrath once they failed to achieve their dreams.

Those thoughts occupied his head as he descended down the stairs towards the emptiness where sinners and those rebels involved in the recent incident were trapped.

He ignored the screams begging for mercy around him. In the darkness hung countless coffins upside down surrounded by at least three to five red talismans. Six or so coffins were grouped with spikes made of unknown red metal piercing through them, and in the middle of them floated a single drop of blood.

The places those spikes pierced, if one calculated properly — should go right through the hearts of bodies locked inside. The single drop of blood in between those coffins served as temptation and punishment to vampires hanging upside down — unable to quench their thirst until the day they were released, as their salvation lingered a bit further from their fingertips.

Red Maheshvara.

The third familiar of the Fourth Pureblood "Blood Lake Reflecting the Northern Star", also known as the World Shackles.

Or Merciful Death.

Those red spikes went by countless names but every vampire knew of them. Especially those that committed grave sins and were cursed to suffer. The Fourth Pureblood — despite having the kindest appearance of six, was the one in charge of punishments for vampires.

His duty was more of a natural thing rather than something he strives for. Because his familiar was unique, it only takes a single drop of the Blood Lake's blood to call upon it, and could be discharged continuously. He doesn't even need to use his consciousness to command this familiar — it will naturally latch itself to the hearts of nearby prey and continue to maintain its form for as long as its host lives, feeding on their blood.

For vampires, this kind of familiar was simply a natural punishment!

It also conveniently solved their problem of keeping prisoners in check. Vampires didn't kill their offenders — they'd simply lock them for a period of time, according to the weight of their crimes. The duration of punishments spanned from a few decades to a few centuries — and only then would they be released from this imprisonment.

The Red Maheshvara didn't kill its victims — it only sealed their bodies while keeping their minds intact. Because all it takes to release the prisoners from it is for someone to remove the drop of blood in between coffins — it was also convenient to use and remove this familiar without having its master be present in person.

At the same time, it guaranteed that prisoners won't be able to take their own lives in despair. The crimson stake through their heart also won't be able to kill them — regardless if they were vampires or not.

The South of Eden was Hell for vampires under the ground, while above was a gambling den full of sins. With Higher Nobles on one side and W.E.R.P. headquarters on the other, it was impossible to escape even if they somehow managed to break through their restraints.
