The Butchies were a queer female punk band from Durnham, North Carolina, active from 1998 to 2005. The band worked to increase awareness of queer social issues and the permeability of gender, with a bit of nice humor. For example their first album Are We Not Femme? plays on the title of the first Devo album (Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!) and shows lesbians aren't forbidden from playing around with traditional ideas of gender and femininity, with the cover art showcasing the band in skirts and wigs.
