Throughout our American history, sports have played an important role in shaping our society. For many years, it had reflected racist and sexist attitudes to African American as well as women of both colors. However, sports had provided a way for immigrants, minorities and women to overcome prejudice and obtain more opportunities. Waves of immigrants came to U.S. shores, many found they were shut out by the nation's top schools and career options. Often, sports were one of the few means for immigrants to show their talents in order to improve their lives. At the beginning of the 1900s, Irish, Italian and Jewish Americans were often looked down upon by Americans. Yet, boxers and basketball players such as John L. Sullivan, Jim Corbett, Benny Leonard, Rocky Marciano, Joe DiMaggio and Hank Greenberg all became huge stars even though they were of different ethnic. They offered much more than proof that others ethnic groups can play sports and be successful but also hope that immigrant families could find success and become fully accepted by and as Americans.
