The Boxer Rebellion was an uprising that took place in China from 1899 to 1901.The Boxers are known in China as the "Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists." Ordinary villagers reacted violently against the increasing influence of foreign Christian missionaries and diplomats in China. Their movement is also known as the Yihetuan Movement. During the 19th century, Europeans and Americans imposed on the people of China more frequently. They tried to spread Christianity throughout the country, which angered many who had seen this as a loss of Chinese culture. In the eyes of Chinese, they were rude and uncivilized foreigners and they had begun pushing Chinese people around. "Boxer" is obviously not Chinese, it was the British who gave this name to the rebellious villagers. It was chosen because they did not have a fitting word for a martial artist, so they chose the one they assumed was closest.
