alternative universe: everyone has a guardian angel only they can see; their angel looks like their soulmate they meet later in life.
Age 13
"Maybe your soulmate just isn't as clumsy as you are," Karen told her thirteen-year-old son who hadn't seen his guardian angel in his dreams in a while.
Michael dropped his spoon into his cereal and glanced at his mum with a stern look.
"Maybe he just doesn't like how I look or something."
"He?" Karen raised his eyebrow.
Michael nodded. "Yes he, do you have a problem that my soulmate is a boy?"
"Of course not, Michael!" She threw the kitchen towel at her son. "You're being ridiculous. You just never mentioned your soulmate is a boy."
"Well, he is. The prettiest boy I've ever seen." He grinned at her, she replicated his big smile.
"I'm sure your soulmate isn't disappointed at how you look, maybe he's just confused or has a taller pain tolerance than you do."
"I just hope I meet him soon."
Age 16
Michael got out of his mother's car. She didn't let him leave before he would hug her.
He loved her, he really did. He felt sorry that she had to see him be miserable.
Michael's been seeing his therapist for six months now and he learned he's not the only one coming there because they haven't found their soulmate yet. Having a soulmate has been both, a blessing and a curse to humankind.
The good thing about always being sad was that he got to see his guardian angel all the time. The pretty blond boy with baby blue eyes and the prettiest smile.
As he was thinking about him he entered the waiting room.
When Michael thinks back at that moment he wasn't sure if he was dreaming, or maybe the angel appeared because he was sad. What he did notice was that the pretty boy didn't notice him. And he looked much better than he did in a pale, glowy appearance he had as a guardian angel.
It was his soulmate, in his flesh form, sitting in the waiting room of the therapist he's been seeing for the past six months.
Suddenly, Michael didn't feel sad anymore but the boy was still there, he didn't disappear.
Michael walked to the boy and sat down next to him.
"You look even prettier in real life."
Age 16
"This is weird," Luke commented nervously as he played with the straw in his drink.
"Why?" Michael asked with a smile on his face.
It's been a week since they've met and they've made an effort to see each other every day. Today was their first date after Luke asked him out.
"Because..." He blushed. "It feels like we've known each other since we were toddlers but I also think of us as strangers."
Michael smiled. "That's why we're here. To change that. I mean we still need to learn if our music tastes are compatible."
"Or what?"
"Or maybe they got us wrong." He winked at Luke, who blushed immediately.
"I'm sure they got it right." Luke was looking at his hands as if looking at him became too much.
"Oh really?"
Luke nodded and looked back at the sage green eyes. "I thought you were beautiful when I was four. It's been a week since we've met and I've been feeling like my life is much better than it was when I was hiding from you. And..." Luke pointed at Michael's shirt. "I love My Chemical Romance so I'm sure there'll be no issue in the music department."
Michael couldn't take it anymore. He stood up a bit and leaned over the table to kiss Luke.
At first, he looked surprised but when Michael placed his hand on Luke's cheek he melted into the touch and let their lips touch for the first time.
"That's funny," Michael added as he was still in a bit of shock from his first kiss. "I used to trip over things on purpose so my angel would appear."
"You don't have to anymore." Luke smiled. "I'm here now."
