In this lesson, we are going to learn the future tense in Spanish.

When we talk about the future, we usually start with the phrase "...going to".

For example, I am going to finish writing this chapter. OR He is going to take a bath later.

The verb for "going to" is IR (to go).

Here is the conjugation for the verb IR.

Yo: voy

Tú: vas

Él, Ella, Usted: va

Nosotros: vamos

Vosotros: vais

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes: van

Por ejemplo,

1. Ellos me van a esperar.

They are going to wait for me.

2. Voy a contralos.

I am going to count on them.

3. Vas a perder.

You are going to lose.

IMPORTANT: As you can see, we put "a" after the verb IR because we are predicting an action in the future. For instance, if we take the first example, "They are going to wait for me." "They" are doing the action of "waiting". Thus, "a" should be placed in front of "esperar(to wait)".
