My heart is beating fast. Cal's words seem to haunt the large, converted warehouse.

Lila is no longer listed as Cupid's Match.

Lila is no longer in the Cupids Matchmaking Service system at all.

My mind whirs with questions. My whole body feels cold.

How can that be? What does it mean?

I feel Cupid's body tense; the muscles in his arms harden on either side of me and his fingers almost imperceptibly tighten against the cool surface of the counter. Cal watches him – his posture straight and stiff. There's a hint of caution glimmering in the silver and grey hues of his irises. He can sense, as I can, that Cupid is not happy. He's wondering whether Cupid is going to take it out on him.

Mino seems to be the only one of us unperturbed by this revelation. He leans back against the counter by the sink and takes a casual sip of his coffee, his dark eyes glinting as they catch mine.

"What...?" The only word that my mouth seems to be able to form tumbles out of my mouth - barely louder than a whisper. It cuts through the silence though and twists and curls around the tension that hangs thick in the air.

Cal's eyes lock onto mine. Cupid's breathing is heavy, I can feel the rise and fall of his hard chest behind me.

"You were supposed to be hacking the Fates' system, brother – not looking for Lila," says Cupid - his tone is cold.

Cal tugs at his cuff links before meeting Cupid's gaze – silver eyes defiant.

"Well, be that as it may, it's a good job I did. Because the Cupids Matchmaking Service holds the details of every human being on the planet. And Lila is no longer in there."

"What...what does that mean?" I say before Cupid can reply.

Cal looks worried. He steps forward and perches on the stool that Charon just vacated. He runs a hand through his hair then looks down at the counter.

"I'm not sure," he says. "Humans are in the system because their life threads are stored in computer code by the Fates. My fear is that..." he stops talking.

"You think the Fates might have taken me out? That they might have my life thread?" I say quietly.

Cupid tenses again. Cal looks at me tiredly, and I note the dark smudges beneath his eyes. He gives a sharp nod.

"It's possible."

Mino chuckles and we all turn to look at him. He shakes his head slowly, amusement on his face.

"You cupids are all so dramatic," he says.

Cal's eyes narrow.

"It's implausible to think that the Fates have Lila's life thread," continues Mino.
