Cupid and I turn.

Cal stands in the doorway – the grey afternoon light sharpening his angular features. His expression is serious – color washed out from his face. Silence hangs over us.

"Wow. You really do have a messed-up family tree. . . " I say, finally.

Cal nods stiffly before running his fingers through his hair.

"Everything okay, brother?" says Cupid.

He shakes his head once then turns and steps back inside.

"I take it that's our cue to follow him," says Cupid.

We share a look, his thick eyebrow raising, and for a moment it feels like old times. But then his face darkens and he looks away. Together we head back inside – following Cal to the kitchen.

Crystal and Mino are sitting on bar stools at the granite breakfast bar in the center of the space, leaning close to one another. They're both changed from this morning – Crystal in skinny jeans and a baggy grey turtleneck sweater, and Mino in a stiff blue shirt that clings to his muscular arms. Mino's hand is on hers, his eyes unmoving from her face as they speak in murmured tones.

Cal's back stiffens when he sees them. The two look up and pull away – focusing first on Cal as he strides to the other side of the island, then on me and Cupid as we walk through the doorway.

Mino's gaze moves lazily to me and I scowl at him.

"Don't look at me like that, my friend." He puts a hand on his chest in mock hurt.

"I thought you were on my side." The words fall from my lips - angry – and cause both Cupid and Cal to frown.

He shrugs. "I am. We all share a common goal here, Lila Black. However – unlike our original mutual cupid friend– I have no desire to be at the center of a supernatural war that will bring back Mars and be the start of the apocalypse."

A grin broadens on his face as he picks up his coffee mug and takes a sip.

"You know," he continues. "There was a plot back in the 1800's where something similar was attempted, and – seeing as I was the one who stopped it – I have no desire to meet the god of war in the flesh. I have a feeling he may not be too happy with me." He glances at Crystal before meeting my gaze again. "And I rather like being alive."

I exhale and go to stand beside Cal. Cupid leans against the counter by the coffee machine.

"So, from my brother's face – either something terrible has happened. Or he's being overly dramatic for a change," says Cupid. "What's going on?"

"The end of the world is what's happening," says Cal.

Cupid turns to Crystal and raises an eyebrow. "As I was saying. . . "
