John's POV

I woke up pretty early the next morning. Alexander was still asleep, but, surprisingly, (Y/N) wasn't in her bed.

I got up and stretched, before quickly slipping on my boots and walked out of the tent. I looked around for (Y/N) until I spotted her sitting on a log by a small fire she must've set up herself. I quietly came over and heard her humming something (wHAt Y'AlL HumMiNG?).

She's not bad, I thought, smirking.

I snuck up behind her and grabbed her shoulders.

"Boo!" She immediately stopped humming, stood up, spun around, and slapped me.

"Oh! John! I'm sorry." She covered her mouth, then rubbed the back of her neck guiltily.

"Ow..." I rubbed my cheek where she slapped me.

"Sorry." She repeated, sitting back down. "Sit with me. I could use the company." She patted the spot next to her and I sat down.

"You have a nice voice." I said out of the blue.

"Voice? I wasn't even singing." She giggled.

"I know. But your humming was beautiful, so I can only assume your singing is beautiful, too." I shrugged.

"That's not true." She scoffed.

"Well, why don't you sing me something? That way, I can see if it is true." I crossed my arms.

"Pfft. In your dreams, Johnny boy." She reached up a hand and ruffled my hair.

"'Johnny boy'?" I whispered to myself.

"You're up early." I broke the silence.

She shrugged. "So are you."

"So... Is Lafayette up yet?" I coughed awkwardly.

"No. I don't think so." She looked off in the direction of Laf's tent.

"You like him a lot, don't you?" I brought up enough courage to ask.

It wouldn't hurt to see if I have a chance with her.

"Lafayette is very nice, smart, handsome man."

I nodded, a bit disappointed.

"But, I don't know if he's really my type. I mean, we're not even courting or anything, so that's good. I just don't think I should have a relationship with anyone during the war... Anything could happen." She shrugged again.

On the bright side, she doesn't like Lafayette. But... She doesn't want any relationship right now.

"Smart." I sighed.

The silence dragged on, both of us just staring at the fire.

"Bonjour, mon ami." I spun around, and Lafayette was standing there, smiling down at me.

"Oh. Hey, Laf." I smiled back.

"Hey, Lafayette." (Y/N) also greeted him.

"Mon ange." He murmured to (Y/N), sitting down on the other side of her.

I looked over at (Y/N), and I could've swore I saw her roll her eyes.

"How long have you guys been up for?" He asked.

"I woke up around ten minutes go." I shrugged.

"An hour ago." (Y/N) said blankly, still staring down at the fire.

"That's quite early." Laf chuckled.

"I'm aware." (Y/N) shrugged. (wOw So MUch SHruGgiNg)
