"Catherine, is that you?" I heard my grandma say as soon as I walked in.

"Grandma, hello." I smiled as I hugged her.

"Where have you been?" She asked as she took a sip of her full glass of dark red wine.

"Yeah, Cate, where have you been?" Gina said as she came around the corner, a huge smile on her face. She quickly pulled me into a hug, swaying us back and forth.

"I was at a friends." I answered when we stepped back from our hug.

My grandma lowered her wine glass from her lips. "A friends?"

"Betty Cooper's."

"We like Betty, Anne." My mom said as she turned the tv channel in the other room.

"Didn't ask."

Gina raised an eyebrow at me, I shrugged back, being used to my grandma acting like that.

"Question, Cate." Chase said as he took a drink of his water.

"Hit me with it."

"Hit you with what?" He asked.

My laugh echoed through the entryway. "The question, idiot."

He shook his head and let out a small laugh. "Oh, sorry it's late."

"Not even that late." I said as I looked at the clock. "But I guess i'll take that as an excuse."

He stepped closer to me so he could lower his voice and still be heard. "How is your dad so nice if he was raised by... Anne."

I gave him a weird look. "Are you saying there's something wrong with my grandma?" I put my hand to my heart.

"No not at all I was just-"

"Calm down, Chase, I was kidding." I said as I grabbed his shoulder. "Are you guys staying here tonight?"

"I mean we do have a motel through the school, but" Gina answered.

"You can stay here." I nodded.

"Life saver." Gina said as she squeezed my arm.

"I was going to say that Gina could sleep in my room and Chase in the guest bedroom, but my grandma is going to sleep in there." I turned and looked at Chase. "Floor?"

"Sounds fine to me." He nodded.

"Girls and Cate's boyfriend, we're about to play a card game, you better be playing." My grandma yelled to us.

I sighed as we all walked towards the family room where they were. "Not my boyfriend Grandma, we broke up a while ago."

"Oh that's right, I forgot you were dating that criminal."

My mom gasped. "Mom, seriously?" My dad asked her, he looked horrified.

I rolled my eyes. "Not dating him either, Grandma, but still a step up from your last boyfriend."

Gina and Chase looked scared. I covered my mouth, not realizing what I had just said.

"Are you really going to let your child talk to me like that?" My grandma asked my dad.

My dad looked at me then back at my grandma. "Leave her alone, she's had a lot going on with school."

"School?" She asked.

"Grandma will you just deal the cards, please." Jenna asked her as she sat back in her chair.

"Where's the little one?" My grandma asked as she looked around.

"Brielle already went to bed." My dad answered as he squeezed the bridge of his nose, something he does when he feels a headache coming on.

"I should get to bed." I said as I stood up. "Haven't been sleeping well the past few days."

My mom looked up at me and nodded instead of asking questions. "Okay, honey, sleep well."

"Goodnight." I said as I walked out, Chase and Gina following me.

"Your house is so nice." Chase said as he looked around as we walked up the stairs.
