-----------------------------------

She could feel him staring at her from across the campfire.

Their packs were age old enemies and the atmosphere was thick with pretense. Faye felt it down to the marrow in her bones and the feeling was suffocating her. She looked across the fire, keeping her eyes away from him and looked straight at where Jonathan sat. He was her packs beta and the moment their eyes met, she knew she had to stick to the pretense.

The treaty had been ratified to galvanize peace between the two packs. They were the strongest in the country but old tales spoke of blood and persecution before the restful period. Faye felt her skin prickle once again and she looked at where her body felt magnetized too.

He sat in the middle of the circular form of the integrated packs. Conversation filled the forest in which they decided to meet. It was legacy, the full moon had past a week before and the Alpha's called for it to happen. There he sat, the Alpha of the supposed enemy pack.

Her mate.

She could sense it, no one else knew. No one else should ever know. Faye could tell it was the exact thought that flitted through Alexander's eyes when he looked at her. He had been silent the whole night every since he saw her walk into the forest. Now, nothing but a fire raged between them, and the campfire too.

It was almost chemical, the feeling. She saw what happened when two mates finally met each other. It seemed magical, like it was a predetermined love. Wolves mate for life. It was embedded into her pack law. Except, this could never happen. Not with her clan and his. Not when their was an unspoken decree of hatred. All it took was for Alexander and Faye's father; the two alphas to break the treaty. All hell would break loose.

Her breathing increased and she shifted her eyes to the sky. The stars gave her solace. She was never a fan of the moon. It was the sickest irony, the first time she turned she had been drawn to the highest peak of the forest cliff where the stars were easily seen against the city lights. Her blood still ached from the abrupt transformations. Everyone else her age got their shifts under control by now, but her body and mind seemed like two differing entities.

She pulled her head down and searched the circle for her father. Seeing him nowhere, she silently got up from where she sat and whispered quietly to the person beside her she was going to go into the forest. The person, who was apart of the other pack didn't even hear her or know she was there. She smiled sadly, and moved her hurting limbs up.

She turned around and headed into the forest. Almost like clockwork to the darkness, her senses heightened. She could smell the petrichor in the earth. She could almost hear the small dew drops on the blades and leaves fall commit suicide as they fell to the ground. She knew her eyes dilated enough for her to see distances that humans would never understand were even in their sight scale.

She walked further into the forests, touching the tree barks as she went. She heard leaves breaking and she turned around. No one in sight, she stood skeptical. It could be another animal preying the forests, not knowing there was a bigger danger around. She knelt and crumbled leaves in her palm, throwing it to the right direction as a mislead.
