Chapter 45: In-hell-itance

Judgement has a distinct smell.

This is what Blaize Campbell was thinking as she sat on the edge of her cabin with Mrs. Kunetko, Head of Lakeview Camp and two other teachers in front of her. The smell, as she so determined it to be reeked of something acidic. Almost like when you are blindfolded and told you will be smelling roses and instead someone puts a lemon near your nose. It also had a heavy undertone. Like the smell itself had wings and ever so slowly, it was losing it's ability to defy gravity. God, this place smelled so much like judgement.

"Blaize," the voice from the main woman called her out of her thoughts. She knew the outcome of this. They would never believe her and whoever gave them these photos had a personal vendetta against her.

"Blaize, could you please explain what is happening in that photo?" The lady sounded like she was losing patience. Blaize looked up at her and saw that she was wearing a pink polo shirt. Who the fuck wore polo shirts nowadays?

"Miss, whatever I say won't matter because you have already decided what is happening in this photo." she softly spoke. The only person that hadn't spoken since Blaize was given the open envelope was Ms. Kunetko. In fact, Blaize hated the look on her face, where everyone else looked angry - Connecticut with a stick up her ass looked disappointed.

Blaize sighed and got up from where she was sitting, it was enough of them towering over her. She was the motherfucking Kilimanjaro, they could all take a hike. "Look lady, contrary to what you may believe - the truth and the real truth is that Professor Reeds gave me a place to stay that night. I had been drinking and he found me half rocketed away from Earth and decided to keep an eye on me. That's why he wasn't there when Jonathan overdosed. It wasn't... Nothing was his fault. All of it was mine."

All four pairs of eyes were on her.

It felt like that cartoon moment when they all blinked at the same time and Blaize stood with her eyebrows to her forehead. Instead, she heard only one voice.

"I believe her."

Ms. Kunetko stepped forward and took the envelope from Blaize's hands and brought it to the boss woman. "I believe her because for as long as I've known Blaize, she likes lying and she likes putting herself first. There is nothing in this for her, nor would she put herself in a vulnerable place."

Blaize shifted her gaze to Ms. Kunetko, her jaw nearly fell and she could have sworn that the teacher was looking at the envelope with as much hatred as herself.

"Blaize, as much as I want to believe you - there is still so much wrong with this equation. Jonathan testified against Professor Hudson's whereabouts the night of his accident and Professor Hudson agreed. If what you are saying is right, then he both lied and you violated camp conduct. "

The person standing next to her spoke in spite, "Irregardless of any of that. There is still something heavily implying that you and Reed Hudson have a less than professional relationship." He looked to Blaize with his lip curled in disgust and a sneer that would normally make her laugh.

"Irregardless isn't a word," Blaize said matter of factly. She turned to the woman again and spoke only to her. "If you need to fuck someone up, Reed isn't who you're searching for. He only did what any other kind human would do. I was.... not myself and he was being the responsible adult. If you need to get mad at anyone, I'm your girl."

"Blaize, as endearing as that sentiment is - this puts both you and Professor Reed in jeopardy, not only in camp but with the law. You better hope this photo means nothing. "

"I don't need to hope, Chief. Hope has never done anything for me in the past, so I stick to what I know. What I know is that I haven't screwed your debates teacher. "

Not yet, Blaize's mind burst.

"I think it would be-"

"Can I see those photos one more time please?" Blaize came out and addressed the elephant in the room. The angle it was taken showed that it came from the boys side of the camp, but she couldn't get any idea on who would hate her so much and why.

"I don't think it's smart if-" the man spoke

"I've already seen it, I just want to see if there's anything there to help me prove my case." Blaize pled. She could see Ms. Kunetko frown in her direction, sensing something was definitely not right. Once she was handed the photos, Blaize flipped through them slower this time. She looked around all corners for anything that would remotely help her find which idiot had a deathwish.

Then she saw it.

In the bottom right corner of the last photo, where she was clutching on to Reed's shirt like it was the only thing that could keep her protected.

The photo had a stamp of the date, the time and the lens type that was usually used by photography students in order to make a tally of their work for their portfolio. The only way Blaize knew this was because her brother was an aspiring photographer.

These were her brother's photos.
