Chapter Twenty-Six

Countdown

Nanase Haruka’s Point of View

“You ready?” Rin asked. “Your final race of the entire Championships.”

He slapped me playfully on my back.

            “Hn,” I responded simply.

“You won gold in all the other relays (with me), and first as well in the other freestyle races as well, so you better win first in this five-hundred meter as well, man,” Rin chuckled, punching my shoulder playfully. “Got your goggles in hand? How about the swim cap?”

“Rin,” I deadpanned passively. “Really? I’ve been doing this for the past week, and you’d think I’d forget the necessities.”

“In other words,” Rin laughed. “Exactly what you just said.”

“Why, thank you,” I sighed. “Though it’s good to know that my friend worries ever so much about me.”

            “What,” Rin replied aghast. “No!”

After a few moments of Rin’s small façade, we both started to laugh at each other.

“The Men’s Final Freestyle competition will begin in less than five minutes,” the speaker boomed through the microphone. “Repeat. The Men’s Final Freestyle competition will begin in less than five minutes.”

I looked at Rin, before nodding at him, “Time.”

“Good luck,” he patted my back roughly before leaving the main atrium of the stadium and into the stands . . . where Makoto and Kasumi were supposed to be.

I looked at the supposed seats Kasumi and Makoto would be sitting at. There was no sign of them at all . . .

“Get ready, Nanase,” Coach Yamamato ordered. “Can’t have your winning streak broken at this point in time due to inability to get to the pool in time now can we?”

I nodded my head, my serious attitude now plastered onto my face, “Yes, sir.”

I bowed before leaving towards my panel and stepped on it. I warmed up with some stretches before the speaker boomed.

“Would all contestants of the Men’s 500 Meter Freestyle please board your panels for an attendance check,” the announcer spoke. “Repeat. Would all contestant fo the Men’s 500 Meter Freestyle please board you panels for an attendance check.”
