Prologue

Prologue 

There he stood, in front of me, with his sad frown and geeky clothes, and his glasses awkwardly resting on the bridge of his nose.

“Lou,” I begin, my eyes brimming with tears. “You don’t have to apologize for that. I mean, I’m so proud of you.” Damn, my voice cracked at the last bit.

“You’re lying, Ellie. I know it.” He replies, sighing. “Look, if you’re so bothered about it, then I won’t go to the auditions. I don’t want to go and leave you being sad and all—“

I cut him off. “No, Louis. Go, audition for the X Factor. It’s been your life-long dream, and as your best friend, I don’t want to ruin it.”

Louis took a step closer to me. “Are you sure, Ellie?” I nodded. In the future, I was surely going to regret this, but this is for Louis. I can’t let him be sad because I didn’t let him go audition.

“Yes, Louis. I know you’ll win. I’m sure of it.” I said, forcing my best smile, hoping it would convince him that I wasn’t sad.

He sighed, and wrapped his arms around me, making my heartbeat go a bit fast. I guess I’d miss this feeling when he leaves. “You know you’re not very good at lying. I know you’re not happy, Ellie.”

I couldn’t take it any longer, so I burst into tears.

“Hey, don’t cry. It’s really fine with me if I don’t go, Ellie. Really.” He says, tightening his grip around me. He was trying to be happy, but I heard the sadness in his voice which made me cry harder.

“No, Louis. Follow your dream. I want you to be happy. Staying here with me won’t make you happy enough.” I say, pushing him away from me.

“Are you sure, Ellie?” Louis asks once more, concern showing on his face. I smile, and slowly nod.

Louis crushes me in a tight hug, and I hug him back, sobbing my feelings out. If only he knew what I really felt…

“Thank you, Ellie. You don’t know how happy I am.” Louis says whilst pulling away and wiping my tears with his thumb. “You are the best friend anyone could ever have. Thank you so much!”

I smile. “Just one thing, Lou. Promise me you’ll never change, ever? And we’ll always talk to each other every day?”

Louis nods. “Promise.”

I never knew that I would be losing my best friend forever.
